I'm seeing lots of 'rivalry factor' talk around here. People are saying that some rivalries will do better because their rivalry is good, some will do worse because their rivalry is bad, ect. Let's find out what B8 truly thinks about these rivalries (note that this isn't supposed to be a rank by contest strength thing, don't do that).

Big Boss vs The Boss is another thing i don't get, people see them rivals? All Jack wants is to be her student again, defeat her was his mission but it's the last thing he wants, and the Boss doesn't want to beat Snake either and him killing her is something she just sees as neccesary. This should be Big Boss vs Ocelot, or even Big Boss v Volgin. In the end all MGS3 really is is Naked Snake and Volgin competing for The Boss', Eva's and Ocelot's effections (even though, unbeknownst to the two, they were being played by all three of them from the start).

They're rivals in the sense that their goals are in direct opposition with one another, regardless of what they "want." They may not have bad blood or anything, but they're definitely rivals.

The Boss' mission is secretly help Snake stop and kill Volgin, obtain the Legacy and then get killed by Snake.
Big Boss' mission is stop Volgin's plans, kill Volgin and the Boss and, though it wasn't in his briefing, he was sent there to get the Legacy from the Boss.
Their loyalties are the same, what they would have for themselves is basically the same, their missions were the same. Granted, Jack isn't all that interested in the worldpeace that the Boss desires before she dies but he is hardly opposed to it.
They "compete" in the sense that they are two regularly sparring practitioners of the martial arts but as far being in a vote for the greatest rivalry ever, Big Boss maintains a half dozen other rivalries that both he and his opponent are a billion times more passionate about then this.

A rivalry doesn't have to be rooted in opposing views. Ryu and Ken trained together, fought together, maintain the same loyalties and goals -- but they're still rivals. Big Boss and The Boss are at odds with each other throughtout MGS3, even if it isn't what they really want. The Boss antagonizes and pushes Big Boss to do what he has to do on a consistent basis. Lopen's right that, despite there being no bad blood between them, they're still rivals.
One of them thinks they are at odds with the other. And that's the one that still took the hand of the other in surrender thinking "ok defection, if that's what the Boss is doing, I guess I can deal" only to get rejected off the bridge. They might be rivals in the utmost vaguest, broadest sense off the word but how in the hell is this in the contest. Go Big Boss v. Solid Snake, Big Boss v. Revolver Ocelot, Big Boss v. Volgin, Big Boss v. Gene, Big Boss v. Python, Big Boss v. Cunningham, Big Boss v. Major Zero if you want a rivalry/actual antagonist/opposing ideology.

Half of those are just plain bad, the others aren't good enough to make it in. Big Boss vs. The Boss is a fine rivalry, better than most in this contest.
I think the rivalry being one that neither one really wants makes it more interesting personally. It's different from your normal "you're evil and you must be stopped!" "I will destroy your planet and I won't be stopped!" rivalry which is kinda cool. It's also why I like Dan/Sagat. Uniqueness counts.

Yeah, Big Boss/The Boss gets bonus points for being a unique situation. Regardless of the truth behind MGS3, The Boss definitely antagonizes Big Boss throughout the course of the game. Sure, her main purpose is to strengthen him so that he can finish the mission when the time comes, but she is still an antagonist to him.
