From what I remember, an Archer pretty much needs to get into a pattern of running back and forth between the torches, getting hit with Earth Slash and having Speed Save go off enough that you can double turn him

Actually, if you have good zodiac with Wiegraf (this needs pre-planning) and the right equipment (108 Gems, Power Sleeve, Green Beret), you can win at something like Level... 21? Doesn't need much if any grinding regardless. Basically, you make sure you're speed 8 (same as him), so he goes first, uses Lightning Stab on you for the 2HKO, you activate Speed Save. You use Charge+5 on him, then immediately get the next turn (since you're now speed 9 and he's still 8) and attack him once more for the win.

END OF CHAPTER REVIEW QUESTIONS!

1. What is your favorite battle in Chapter 4? Least favorite?

Favourite is Balk, because it's so randomly nasty. Possibly the hardest overall fight in the game for challenges (sometimes it's the Execution Site, sometimes it's other things) and always extremely satisfying to beat. Least favourite... Murond against Vormav/Rofel/Kletian. Virtually impossible to lose since it's a total joke, but it can break your equipment! Just annoying. Unequipping your armour and helmet removes that threat (since V and R lack weapon and accessory breaks in that fight) but it's stupid that I have to fall back on that.

2. What is your favorite Chapter 4 moment?

Delita's Betrayal (the scene with him and Olan and Ovelia late). His character really comes full circle and you see what he has become. Great callbacks to previous scenes ("I told you I'd make you into a real monarch!"), deliciously blunt, generally the reason I think Delita is great.

3. Who is your favorite character in Chapter 4?

Delita.

END OF GAME REVIEW QUESTIONS!

1. What is your favorite battle in the game? Least favorite?

Probably Golgorand Execution Site and Magic City Gariland, for reasons previously stated.

2. What is your favorite moment in the game?

Delita's Betrayal.

3. Who is your favorite character in the game?

Delita.

4. Have you ever completed a FFT SCC? If so, which one(s) and what did you think of it?

It's not really an exaggeration to say FFT SCCs are one of the main reasons I even have a GameFAQs account; I did 17 of them in the space of a year around a decade ago. I really got into the community that surrounded them.

The only non-GameShark SCCs I didn't do were Bard, Mime, and Calculator (any version). Obviously I enjoyed doing them or I wouldn't have done so many; FFT was at the time (and likely still is) my favourite game and it felt like a great way to really get a feel for what the classes could do.

Lopen posted...
If your dude gets KOed in battle and is left that way for 3 rounds without getting revived (Geomancers have no way to do that) or finishing the battle, the party member turns into a crystal (or a treasure chest with a piece of their gear) and is gone forever. You can pick up the crystal to gain abilities that the dead one had or restore your hp/mp, but yeah, obviously you don't want this to happen to your party members-- though it can be useful against enemies.

Interesting. I think I like this game mechanic.

Oh really? Huh. I actually have good compat by sheer luck and a few levels on this (so I can use something that isn't green beret and still have 8 speed) and all this gear. I assume I'm supposed to use Windslash Bow? Or is it also necessary to use lightning bow there?

Maybe I'll pick this run back up. (I actually started it on LFT then realized the saves were compatible so I went back to normal sometime in chapter 3 because LFT is actually more difficult for this challenge despite the buffs to the archer)

108 Gems strengthens everything, so yeah, go with Windslash Bow. And if you're already speed 8 unequipped, swap in a Twist Headband for that Green Beret. You'll still need to proc Speed Save, of course, but it should be very doable.

Okay, let’s do the final review for Final Fantasy Tactics! First of all, we’re still in the midst of Square’s golden era, when we got 5 great Final Fantasy games in the span of 5 years. I don’t think any other series has ever come close to accomplishing something that impressive. I know it takes longer to make video games nowadays and all that, so we may never see something like this again. That’s why it’s always great to revisit this golden era from time to time.

As for Final Fantasy Tactics, it’s the most unique among these five games, for obvious reasons. It has a job-oriented battle system that is SRPG in style. The design is sprite based and the backgrounds are more simplistic. You don’t see the production values in FFT that you see in the others, but it’s not a mainline game, so it’s understandable, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. From my understanding, Final Fantasy Tactics wasn’t even originally going to have “Final Fantasy” in its name. They renamed it with FF in the name to capitalize on the massive success of Final Fantasy VII. I wonder how popular this game would have been if it had been named “The Zodiac Brave Story” or “War of the Lions” or something like that. I mean, I probably would’ve played it because I bought virtually everything Square put out in those days.

But let’s break this thing down. The obvious first place to start with Final Fantasy Tactics is the battle system. Many people rave about the Job System like it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, but honestly, I’m not a huge fan of it. That’s not to say I dislike it, but it’s certainly not my favorite. “Customization” isn’t a big deal to me when it comes to video games, so that’s probably got something to do with it. I haven’t experimented a great deal with it either. I usually just found something I liked and stuck with it. There are several Job Classes I’ve never even touched. I suppose that’s my own fault, but it’s never really interested me enough to want to mess around with it.

This time around was a very unique experience for me when it came to FFT because I attempted and completed my very first SCC with the Geomancer Class. It was a lot of fun, I must admit, although I did miss wreaking havoc with Orlandu at the end of the game, which I’ve always viewed as a cathartic experience after struggling with so many major battles up to that point. I do enjoy the strategic element of the battle system, being able to move around, arrange your troops, figuring out how to best attack the enemy, especially in an SCC with Geomancers. You definitely had to figure out how to maximize the potential of the class in order to win battles like Golgorand, and you had to get lucky with status effects. It was a pretty thrilling experience to win a hard battle, too, and it wasn’t quite as frustrating as I was originally expecting. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll probably never do another one, but I enjoyed my experience overall.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Job Class in the game and why?

Next, let’s talk about the soundtrack. I’m not really sure what I think about FFT’s soundtrack overall. I’d probably consider it average in comparison to the rest of the series. Aside from some really good battle tracks, it doesn’t have a lot of standout music, aside from my personal favorite song in the game, “Requiem.” I honestly have a hard time distinguishing between some of the music in the game, whether it’s battle stuff or cutscene stuff. I would have a hard time telling you when most songs play during the game or what song plays during certain battles or scenes. I guess a lot of that has to do with the fact that I’m not as big of a fan of the soundtrack, so I haven’t spent a lot of time listening to it on its own like I have with other games in the series.

I suppose I will go ahead and list a few of the songs from the game I particularly like:

1. Requiem ) – There’s just something about this song that fits the mood of the scene in which it plays. It evokes a strong sense of sorrow, in my opinion. Just a beautiful song.
2. Battle on the Bridge ) – I just love the way this song builds up before hitting the main part. Very well done. This is one of the few tracks I recognize when it plays, and it has a sense of “Oh man, something big’s about to go down” when I hear it.
3. Under the Stars ) – Doesn’t really feel like a battle theme to me, but I really like the melody and the instruments in it. I enjoy songs that build up to something and then just hit you with it, and this song delivers on that front.
4. Antipyretic ) – Another song that really has a “Oh it’s on now!” feel to it. Fun Fact: When I was in high school, I was in a spelling competition (I’m a nerd, I know), and one of the bonus words at the end was “antipyretic.” It was thanks to FFT that I knew how to spell that word! Who says you can’t learn important stuff from video games?
5. Ovelia’s Theme ) – Just a very pretty song, befitting Ovelia. I think it hits a wide range of emotions, which fits the character.

Bonus Question: What are some of your favorite songs from the game?

Next, let’s talk about the story. Overall, Final Fantasy Tactics has a darker story than most other games in the series. There is very little humor, and there are very few plot points that are resolved happily. There is a lot of political intrigue and things of that nature, to the point that it’s hard for me to keep up with who’s doing what and why sometimes. A lot of people hail FFT’s story as the best in the series for these reasons, and while it’s not my personal favorite, I do like it a lot. It’s basically a story of Ramza’s and Delita’s differing philosophies and how they push toward the same goal for different motives using different methods (No, this doesn’t make them rivals. It makes them foils, and excellent foils at that. I love a good foil). Obviously, there are a lot of various plot points along the way, but they all work together to provide a contrast between these two central characters. Everyone in the game is basically presented in terms of how they relate between Ramza and Delita, or so it seems to me.

The supernatural element of the story is notably absent from the first half of the game (aside from mages and all that), but the Zodiac Brave stuff takes center stage for the second half of the game. Some people like it, some don’t. I personally like it because it raises the stakes and ups the overall tension by presenting these demons who are out to conquer the world and are using this war to further their own ends. Unfortunately, the battles against the Zodiac demons are often lacking in terms of delivering on that potential. Adramelk gave me a lot of trouble for this SCC, but he’s pretty easy during a normal playthrough when you have Orlandu. I imagine he still wouldn’t be hard for a normal game without Orlandu, too. Only Velius tends to trip people up on a regular basis.

Like I said before, FFT’s plot tends to confuse me sometimes, and it feels like there are a lot of things left unanswered. Sometimes leaving things deliberately unanswered can be good (Like whether Ramza’s really alive at the end of the game or not, for example), but I feel like the game could’ve used some more exposition, especially when it came to characters like Ajora. I still don’t really have a clue about that guy, other than he’s your typical JRPG “Messiah figure who actually turns out to be evil SHOCKER” dude. Seriously, how many games out there actually represent religious figures in a good light (I mean, other than stuff like Bible Adventures)? They’re pretty rare! Anyway, you would figure you would know at least a little something about the last boss of the game, but I still feel left in the dark when it comes to Ajora. Maybe someone can shed a little light on the guy for me.

Overall, I do enjoy FFT’s storyline and watching Ramza being the guy who goes against the tide, having virtually everything against him and beating the odds anyway. I love the “Do the right thing and never back down, no matter what” type of character, and Ramza personifies that better than just about anyone. Watching things just seemingly get worse and worse for him as the story progressed but never giving up is the highlight of the story for me. FFT is Ramza’s journey, and he’s the true hero of the story. Get outta here, Delita.

Bonus Question: What is your opinion of FFT’s story?

3 best songs:

1. Under the Stars - (wish this played more than once!)
2. Decisive Battle - (... yup, wish this played more than once! Actually I think it plays in one of the colliery levels too)
3. Trisection - (this on the other hand plays plenty, and usually in really cool fights, which probably influences how much I like it, thinking about it)

Best job class is the Wizard/Black Mage. The design and the high magic attack makes it fun to splash with other classes moreso than most. My personal favorite setup is Black Magic/Draw Out/situational/situational/Teleport on my Black Mage. It's badass. Way cooler than Elmdor. Dancers take a close second.

As for the story... it's good at first, then starts to taper off the more and more. Really starts to drag in Chapter 4 when you're sorta in "welp time to tie up all these loose ends and kill all these NPCs" mode. I like the supernatural element sometimes-- it's done really well with Wiegraf. The other ones though? It's more of an afterthought. I actually think the story would've been a lot better if Wiegraf and the final boss were the only times you saw zodiac stone shenanigans. Fighting the shrine knights as knights who are just trying to control the stones unknowing of their true power for political reasons would be a lot more interesting and less typical FF fare.

The generally "I don't care" cast hurts the story for me too. Tactics Ogre does story a lot better-- shame the gameplay is a significant step down.

Now let’s talk about FFT’s characters. Lopen has already hit on this, but I think the cast overall is rather weak. Ramza is amazing, my third favorite character in the series and one of my favorite video game characters period. Wiegraf and Delita are both awesome, but after that? It’s a pretty sharp dropoff. For me, the main issue is NPCs completely disappearing from the storyline once they join your party permanently (aside from a couple of optional cutscenes involving Mustadio anyway). Agrias was a cool character, but she completely disappears from the plot at the end of Chapter 2, and so she suffers for it.

But probably some of my favorite moments in the game are when Ramza is having an argument with another character during the middle of the battle. It adds to the atmosphere and breaks the monotony of it. It makes the characters feel more “real” by having them talk to each other during battles. Probably one of the neatest touches FFT adds to the game here.

I don’t know if I could really do a proper character ranking here. I’ll just go ahead and say that Ramza is incredible and I love the guy to death. He’s hard to top. Delita and Wiegraf make up the second tier. Below them you have guys like Zalbag, Dycedarg, Agrias, Orlandu, and Ovelia. Then you have everyone else, some good, some bad. I don’t really like Vormav as a villain. He pulls off the “Feels like a major threat” stuff well at Riovanes when he slaughters an entire room of soldiers seemingly effortlessly. He just doesn’t feel like a very “personal” villain. Ramza never actually meets the guy until near the end of the game, and he doesn’t even have any idea who he is until the start of Chapter 4. Vormav is still calling him “that kid” as late as the scene when he’s killing Funeral. Even when you show up at the end of the game, Vormav simply looks up and says, “Oh, it’s you.” No emotion, no buildup, no nothing. It was pretty lame. He’s just not very…hate-able, I guess. The closest he comes is resurrecting Zalbag as a zombie and forcing you to re-kill him.

Yeah, I guess that’s about it. FFT is a really great game. I don’t love it as much as a lot of people on this board do, but I get why they love it so much. I’m just kind of glad to be done with it after getting snagged on a few of those battles toward the end of the game! Whoo!

END OF CHAPTER REVIEW QUESTIONS!

1. What is your favorite battle in Chapter 4? Least favorite?
- Favourite is probably Balk 2, for being a pretty dickish battle if you're not ready for it. Least favourite is probably the Vormav/Rofel/Kletian fight, just for being so pointless

2. What is your favorite Chapter 4 moment?
- The ending. Specifically, the Delita/Ovelia scene, which is one of my favourite scenes in gaming.

3. Who is your favorite character in Chapter 4?
- Delita/Ramza

And while we're at it:

END OF GAME REVIEW QUESTIONS!

1. What is your favorite battle in the game? Least favorite?
- Favourite is probably going to have to be Golgorand Execution Site. Least...Vormav/Rofel/Kletian I guess, once again for being so pointless

2. What is your favorite moment in the game?
- Delita/Ovelia ending scene

3. Who is your favorite character in the game?
- Ramza, my favourite character in gaming

4. Have you ever completed a FFT SCC? If so, which one(s) and what did you think of it?
- I've completed Monk, Wizard and I think Chemist. Have Ninja, Dancer and Archer ones that I never fully finished. They're fun but can get a bit frustrating at times. Can't say I'll ever have the patience for something like Mime, let alone TrueCalc.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Job Class in the game and why?

Hmm. Probably Geomancer actually. Not entirely sure why, but I pretty much always end up with one in my party when I play. I just like the equipment options and nice balance of strong attacks with a very fun ranged option, and they generally allow for a bit of variety (equip for physical attacks, for Elemental damage, the stats to use various secondaries).

From: LeonhartFour | #458
Bonus Question: What are some of your favorite songs from the game?

I've always loved Antipyretic, although really this game has a ton of great battle themes. For whatever reason I've never liked the Altima battle songs though, not sure why since listening to them now they sound fine. Also want to draw special attention to The Pervert, the Lucavi battle theme. It's a bit weird, but it really has a great sense of atmosphere. Captures the "what the **** is this" feel of first seeing Queklain perfectly.

From: LeonhartFour | #461
Bonus Question: What is your opinion of FFT’s story?

Big fan of it, although it seriously tapers off late in chapter 4 when Ramza's role pretty much just becomes "go kill any major players that are still alive" and the whole Lucavi plot is...kind of shaky, since they don't really have much personality beyond "we're evil".

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Job Class in the game and why?

Summoner. While objectively too good, it's a lot of fun to have a skillset which is both a neat swiss army knife (damage, healing, Golem, gravity) but also does one thing really well, which is lay waste to multiple enemies at a time in a way nobody else can really match except maaaybe Meteor and lategame Draw Out, both of which have significant downsides compared to Summon. I also dig the flavour and like seeing those FF staples.

Bonus Question: What are some of your favorite songs from the game?

Under the Stars, Battle on the Bridge, Antipyretic for reasons already mentioned, with Under the Stars taking top honours. I find non-battle themes less memorable in this game, although I quite like the credits piece (rare for me in video games) and that breezy track that plays final opening video that highlights the various classes.

Bonus Question: What is your opinion of FFT’s story?

As someone who thinks FFT is a serious contender for best game ever... eh. Its plot sure as heck isn't the reason why.

FFT's story is a weird case. I don't think it's up to the standards of the better mainline games, mostly because it's so terribly disjointed... I've already commented on a few instances (Barinten/Rafa/Malak plot, Meliadoul, Chapter 4 Limberry). Also, yeah, the lack of characters sticking around. To be fair, most of the playable characters are pretty boring even before they join, so maybe we're not losing that much!

Generally I think the game does a pretty solid job at its political yarn for two chapters (mostly the first chapter), then Ramza gets made a heretic and we play "chase after Alma/zodiac stones/demons" for the rest of the game in a disjointed and not especially interesting way. I have almost nothing but good things to say about chapter 1's plot, then things go steadilly downhill. The big exception here is Delita, who is great in pretty much all chapters except 2, and the cast's star, to me.

Favourite characters are Delita, followed by Algus, followed by... Gafgarion, Izlude, Ramza, Dycedarg, and Rofel in some permutation? It's a decent drop after #2. Also maaan, this is a really male-dominated cast, which isn't an especially good thing. I guess Ovelia and Agrias aren't awful characters but yeah.

Leaving out the Chapter 4 questions because honestly when I play FFT I usually stop before the end, so not really qualified to talk about it.

1. What is your favorite battle in the game? Least favorite?

Favourite battle's probably Fort Zeakden. Least favourite would be one of the pointless ones against random monsters.

2. What is your favorite moment in the game?

Wiegraf after the second battle, probably.

3. Who is your favorite character in the game?

Ramza. Simple as.

4. Have you ever completed a FFT SCC? If so, which one(s) and what did you think of it?

Never had the patience to try, though they've always interested to me. One of my favourite parts of the game is the job system, so I don't think having that part taken out would sit too well with me.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Job Class in the game and why?

Calculator's so much fun to have as a secondary ability. Otherwise I'll go Monk.

Bonus Question: What are some of your favorite songs from the game?

Honestly, never really paid attention to the soundtrack.

Bonus Question: What is your opinion of FFT’s story?

I'm one of those "the Lucavi/Zodiac stones bring the story down a lot" people. First chapter-and-a-half is superb, love the political intrigue. I disagree with the idea that the stakes needed to be upped, the entire first chapter is about how much things need to be changed, with the end chapter realisation of how neither side is any better than the other. If the story had just been about Ramza trying (and failing) to prevent all-out war and then about dealing with the manipulators behind the plot, I'd have loved it; as it is the stones felt unnecessary. Why did he need to save the world? I know it's a Final Fantasy, but even for the people that like that half of the plot, it seems to be the source of all their issues. It felt like a completely generic evil, whereas Game of Thrones-esque feel to the first half was absolutely spot on for me. I love Delita's storypath the most because it sticks to that aspect of the plot and makes it work perfectly.

1 > 2 > 4 > 3.

Rofel? Really?

Stole the words out of my mouth for your Wiegraf hype, man. (Okay, Chapter 1 Wiegraf is fine, though like the sixth best character in that chapter at best! Chapter 3 Wiegraf is a bad joke, blah blah blah GOD IS NOTHING MORE THAN INSECURE PEOPLE'S FANTASY blah blah space flea.)

Rofel just exudes a vibe of creepy competence in his like, 3 scenes (yeah, he doesn't have much!). I just love how he throws his weight around in the Dycedarg scene as he talks about Balbanes poisoning, and the way he brutally stabs Funeral as he begs for mercy also sticks out. He's definitely towards the bottom of the characters I listed, but yeah.

This has inspired me to play FFT again!! Love that game, beaten it probably close to 10 times. Just finished Dorter and the desert. Ramza is still a squire (just mastered it, gained JP up ftw!!), Yeager is my knight, other guy (can't remember his name) is a monk, while Dennis is a black mage. Dorter gave me problems the first time, because the knight had item. Hit one wizard into critical with one shot, knight healed him, wizard kills guy. Hit other wizard into critical with one shot, knight healed HIM, wizard kills guy. Ugh.

Easier second time around, as the knight had charge, and I murdered the wizards ASAP.

For some reason, I find certain job classes having such plain names amusing.

Hahah indeed!

Also, **** Fort Zeakden. I always have trouble here, no matter how I set up my characters. **** you Algus!! I'm thinking of bunching up my guys and bumrushing him (bunching them up away from the wizard chicks of course). Lost 3 times already. I thought level 10 was good enough. Ugh

Yeah bumrushing Algus is the easy way to win that fight. Don't be too scared of auto-potion-- his brave is only 31 I think so it's not going to activate that often. Even if you're not swinging for more than 30 you can still take a crack at him.

On a random note I restarted FFIX yesterday because I felt I didn't remember it well enough. I instantly remember why I love Vivi and think I might've been underrating Steiner. Game starts too slow though. I just got to Lindblum and I'm like wasting half an hour in the town just randomly wandering around and talking to people (for the third town in a row). I hope it snaps out of its "the party splits up and we make an ambiguous plot advancement condition so we can force feed you everything in this town" bit soon.

Steiner is awesome as long as you don't take him seriously.

Normally, I'd say anyone who uses the "As long as you don't take him seriously" line to try to make an excuse is dumb, but I make an exception for Steiner. The dude is just one humongous caricature, and I love him for it. I think he's hilarious.

Well it's not like I've ever had a problem with him, but I've been thinking he's hilarious this playthrough for whatever reason when he was sorta just "around" before. But yeah, absolutely a caricature. A glorious caricature.

Steiner is the man. This is a fact.

Well, in my mind anyway.

In any case, Zeakden beated. I had Indy as a thief for some reason the whole time and was wondering why I kept losing. Great move, jump, and speed, but couldn't deal out much damage. So I turned him into an archer (with move+2 and battle boots, so his move was still 7 or so), and sent him on top of the fort to rain down arrows. Also turned my summoner back to a black mage but kept him with summoning magic, and spammed Shiva twice. Aww yeah Algus dead.

Just saved Boco the chocobo (and already have a black chocobo in my party, with another egg about to hatch), had Gafgarion turn on me (unequipped him before it happened, I've played this game many times....), and saved Mustadio. Ramza is still a monk (I want hamedo as an ability), Yeager is still a knight (with over 200 hp, not sure what to change him into), Indy is now a ninja with martial arts, so he's double punching people, and Dennis is my summoner. Awww yeah :)

All about giving Gafgarion your absolute best stuff so you can steal a bonus copy! Not to mention have a fun, challenging battle.

And Steiner is awesome, but will probably go on about that more when Leon gets to FF9 ;).

Eh, normally I'd agree because I like epic RPG battles (my first ever battle against the final boss of FF VIII when I was a lot younger for instance), but we fight him twice more I believe, and he has all of his stuff there. Besides, with Delita on my side and only knights on his, this battle isn't very challenging anyway...

Actually, maybe not.

As soon as I started getting into the tedious little missions of the game, I realized that I'm not really feeling like playing AC Revelations right now. The storyline stuff and the stuff that deviates from the norm is fun, but the rest of the game...Eh, I guess I'm getting a little worn out with that formula.

Also, how're you planning to play it? Gonna Card it, low-level, high-level, speed-run, what's goin' on?

I'll probably just play it like I normally do.

Like I said, challenges don't really interest me that much. I decided to give the SCC a shot in FFT, but that's more of an exception. It was the first time I'd ever done it.

I'm in the middle of playing Outland right now, so once I finish that off, I'll boot up FFVIII.
