there wasn't a topic yet and since last week ended (or had to end), here it is
- No fatties. Sorry Susan Boyle. Oh wait. - Choose a song, provide a link (no direct downloads, please), and do both of these in a timely manner. - You have to rate, rank, and comment on every song chosen by another member. It doesn't matter how eloquent your reviews are, we won't judge. Just get 'em in! It's a nice exercise. - Have your reviews in by the end of our week. Refusal to do so will result in suspensions and expulsions. - Have fun! This is just a silly thing we do for a few months, no need to take offense, or insult anybody for any reason. Except Carl. Have at him.
~Tha Crew~ Carl KCF Cokes Whakko Bartz Not Dave JC Vince Walrus (?) WingedInsignia
Bolded still need to rank. Is Walrus still in or do we have to find a replacement?
The Walkmen - Angela Surf City (Live on the Interface)
I think the power of this song comes through more in this live version than the studio recording, but if you want the studio version go look it up on youtube or something.
Rank. User: Artist - Track (Average Ranking) High/Low
1. Not Dave: Dan Mangan - Sold (2.875) 1/5 2. WingedInsignia: Return to Forever - Earth Juice (3) 1/6 3. Vince: Goodie Mob - The Day After (3.375) 1/7 4. Bartz: Millencolin - No Cigar (4.375) 1/8 4. KCF: Stellastarr* - My Coco (4.375) 3/6 6. Cokes: Deltron 3030 - Upgrade (A Brymar College Course) (4.5) 1/8 7. JC: Lykke Li - Get Some (5.75) 2/8 8. Whakko: Susan Boyle - Enjoy the Silence (6.125) 3/8 8. Carl: Automatic Loveletter - The Answer (6.125) 4/8
KCF managed the impressive feat of presenting a song that was neither loved nor hated, only garnering votes in the middle. However, most entrants readily acknowledged that last week's lineup was unimpressive. Hopefully this week fares a bit better.
I will try to find a rec tonight. I might settle for something lackluster though. Not really feeling inspired.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
One good thing to do might be to listen to a couple of songs now, then some more songs tomorrow, and then you won't have many songs at all left to listen to on Monday
The Walkmen - Angela Surf City (Live on the Interface) Good. The Walkmen usually bring this raw feeling to their songs. However, this one is missing just a little something, probably in the composition, to make it great.
8.0
Ben Howard - The Wolves Not bad. Really can't get into it.
6.5
Skylar Grey - Love the Way You Lie It's needless to say she has a really good voice, and that the song itself is good. But it just gets so boring.
6.0
Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On I can listen to this, but I don't really enjoy it.
5.0
Lamb - Gabriel Eh, it's okay. It gets kinda muddled and messy and the distortions or whatever don't really help the song.
4.5
Shawn Lee - "Vendetta Jocks" Has a nice progression but each segment is kinda boring and rather uninspired.
4.5
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen It has a good main segment...which is like the only segment except for a break in the middle. Just gets after you hear it the first time.
1. The Walkmen - Angela Surf City (Live on the Interface) Haven't heard a song from them in a couple of years. They seem like a great act to see live if they perform like this
2. Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On Pretty good country song and I realized how I recognized her voice after looking her up
3. Skylar Grey - Love the Way You Lie Wasn't very effective at hitting those high notes but she was interesting from start to finish
4. Tove Styrke - Chaos I was more intrigued by the synthesizer sounds and how to pronounce her name than her voice, but the entire package was fine
5. Ben Howard - The Wolves Needs more of the chorus and less of Ben Howard
6. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen Random sounds like horses galloping and lasers being fired negatively impact what is an already above-average song
7. Lamb - Gabriel Inconsistent vocal style that ranged from pleasant to annoying
8. Protest the Hero - Spoils Not a bad song if you can completely block out the vocals
Not a great week by any means but certainly an improvement from last week

"Anybody interested in grabbing a couple of burgers and hittin' the cemetery?" -Royal "Oh sure, walk to the sun"- Guybrush
Protest the Hero - Spoils i am going to have nightmares of screaming. aaaaaaaaaaugh.
Shawn Lee - Vendetta Jocks This sounds a little like Frozen Synapse but nowhere near as awesome. Not awful, but a little bland. It just didn't really go anywhere. Once it introduced the sort-of-melody at the end it definitely got better though.
Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On I... Actually like a Cokes song? My word. Something is horribly wrong here. Regardless, her voice is great, and I liked the chords. It didn't have any super standout moments but was consistent throughout.
Tove Styrke - Chaos This seems pretty cheat, and the synth was... bubbly? The lyrics started out awesome with like the first line and then sort of dropped off. That being said, it's not that bad, but I feel like it would have greatly benefited from being an acoustic song.
Lamb - Gabriel I was able to zone out the lyrics and make her voice more incomprehensible and it greatly increased the enjoyment of the song. Sort of like that Kwoon song lockes rec'd a while back where you simply couldn't understand the lyrics but it was still great.
Ben Howard - The Wolves Not Dave more like king of folk
Skylar Grey - Love the Way You Lie I love this version so much that I decided to listen mid-rankings instead of continuing to the next song.
The Walkmen - Angela Surf City (Live on the Interface) I think the start of this is a little obnoxious, and I really am not a huge fan of his voice. I also didn't like how the pace just suddenly increased. Yeah, just didn't like the song all around really.
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen I turned this on then immediately turned the volume really low so I could still listen, but nobody else would hear it because it was honestly embarassing. I'm not a huge fan of what I am arbitrarily calling POP BEAT TECHNO, and this is sort of well into that category.
Ben Howard Neko Case Lamb Tove Styrke Shawn Lee The Walkmen Yellow Magic Orchestra Protest the Hero
-- ~Acting on Impulse~ Black Turtle still didn't MAJORA'S MASK
Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On - Choosing a song this good is almost equal to cheating. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen - I love these guys so much, but this is a bit of a poor man's version of Technopolis. Skylar Grey - Love the Way You Lie - This is a ridiculously good song, but somehow it feels like not a single version out there lives up to its full potential. I think this comes closest, though. Lamb - Gabriel - First thought: is this a man or a woman singing? Second thought: hey, this is kinda trippy-hoppy. I still don't know if it's a man or a woman singing, but I like it. Ben Howard - The Wolves - A fun little track, but doesn't really do much. The Walkmen - Angela Surf City (Live on the Interface) - This is good, but I don't see why I would ever want to listen to it again. Shawn Lee - Vendetta Jocks - This didn't leave any impression on me. At all. Protest the Hero ~ Spoils - I'm just going to be polite here and limit this to a "nothing for me."
