I'm listening for the first time. I'm up to "Slow Love Slow," and I've loved everything so far, and "Slow Love Slow" is really slick and awesome. Jazz, old blues, metal, yes please? Can't wait to get to Song of Myself.

"Imaginaerum" is the album title. So many different styles going on in this bad boy. So good.

Annette blends in to this album much better. They found a way to really do it well. Her voice is a thousand times better on a song like "Slow Love Slow" than Tarja's would have been. Just give it a listen. Marco is singing a lot, too.

I like both of them. I think Annette's voice is better by itself, but I didn't think it "matched" Nightwish as well as Tarja did in the past. However, on this album, it matches perfectly.

I like it, but it's not among my favorite albums of theirs. I think my problem is there's too little vocals. This album focuses more on the music (which don't get me wrong, that's really what I love about Nightwish), but it also has less symphonic elements to compliment the rest of it. And I feel some of the songs repeat their chorus way too much. Also a little annoyed they included the full poem in "Song of Myself", but oh well. It's not a bad poem, and there's still music playing behind it.

I've only listened to it twice so far, so maybe I'll come to appreciate it more. I'll agree that Anette's voice is much better on this one, but that's hardly surprising, since this album was actually written with her voice in mind. Dark Passion Play was written before they even found a replacement for Tarja. "The Escapist" showed how good Anette could be when they wrote for her voice.

Early favorites are "I Want My Tears Back", "Storytime", "Scaretale, and "Last Ride of the Day".

To be fair, Nightwish does sound less unique without Tarja. Annette sounds more similar to the singers in most other symphonic metal bands, less operatic and whatnot. Not necessarily a bad thing, just sayin'.

I still dig Nightwish, more into Within Temptation these days but hell yeah Nightwish is classic, good stuff.

While true, I feel Anette has a better range. She does things on this album that Tarja could never, like her spooky singing in "Scaretale".

honestly my favorite Nightwish song period has been with Anette - The Poet and the Pendulum. moment i heard that track i was convinced that the band was evolving in a way that might be better than before. i love Ghost Love Score, but i think Anette's voice just works in many more styles, despite having a weaker voice. opera voice doesn't work in everything. different singers, and different styles for each of them. love 'em both vocally though.

and yeah, awesome album.

Dead to the World is one of my top 5 favorite Nightwish songs! Glad to see you like it so much, because I feel it gets forgotten too often.

A few of my favorite symphonic metal Duet songs (excluding Nightwish):

Visions of Atlantis - "The Secret"
Visions of Atlantis - "Wing-Shaped Heart"
Luca Turilli - "Mystic and Divine"
Luca Turilli - "The Miracle of Life"
Lunatica - "Emocean" Featuring Olver Hartmann (if you youtube it, the first result should be the version with him)

A couple random notes. Luca Turilli is my second favorite band of all time (behind Nightwish). And that Lunatica song is my third favorite song of all time (behind "Ghost Love Score" and Sonata Arctica's "White Pearl, Black Oceans..."

Also there is a symphonic metal band called Coronatus, and all their songs are duets too because they have 2 lead singers, both of which are women (one is a soprano singer, and the other is more of a standard rock singer), so it's kind of interesting. I think they're really good. For them, I'd recommend trying "Der Letzte Tanz" and "Cast My Spell".

I'll definitely look into them.

After a few more listens, I'm really appreciating "Turn Loose the Mermaids", "Rest Calm", and "The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove" now. The other songs are good too, but they haven't quite caught me yet. I really want to like "Song of Me", but my attention always drifts away during the poem recital. It's a nice poem, but my thoughts still wander during it.

So now that I've listened to Imaginaerium several times, I'll post my opinions of the album!

Taikatalvi - Generally I'm not a huge fan of short introduction tracks, but I really like this song. It's not quite as short as most intro tracks either. It's really beautiful sounding, and I kind of wish this had been a full song. But it IS a really short song, so it can't quite compare to the more developed songs on the album. But as an intro, it's pretty fantastic.

Storytime - This song has quite an unfair advantage, as it had nearly a full month of a head start over the other tracks, so I've heard it about 100 times more than the rest of the album. But for now, it's probably still my favorite track. Everything sounds amazing in this song. Anette's voice is great, and I love the verses and choruses pretty equally, which isn't always the case. Also the heavily orchestrated portion of the song that goes from about 2:45 to 4:00 is one of my favorite parts of the entire album.

Ghost River - This track is easily one of my least favorites. The starting music is actually really great, and reminds me of something from the Oceanborn or Wishmaster era. Everything seems pretty fine on this song for while, but then Marco's vocals kick in, and he's in super angry mode. I mean, I get the point of why it's that way, but I just don't care for it. The chorus is pretty good, and his voice is much more controlled there. Though the more I listen to this song, the better it becomes, but for now, it's still pretty much a bottom tier Nightwish song.

Slow, Love, Slow - I like that Nightwish decided to put a jazzy sounding song on here. It's great to try new things. This song is very relaxing, and it makes me want to listen to it on a dark rainy evening. I'm a big fan of the band Diablo Swing Orchestra, who often incorporates jazz into symphonic metal, and while I like most of their music better than Slow, Love, Slow, it does make itself more memorable by being ridiculously slow paced, which is very desirable at times. Not one of my favorite tracks on the album, but I really like it.

I Want My Tears Back - This is one of the most addictive tracks on the album. It has so much replay value. Several times, I've played it again immediately after ended. I love the pipes used in this song. Anette's voice is so serene sounding during the verses, and Marco's voice is, IMO, his best sounding on the album during the chorus of this song. This song is just so great, and has the highest energy of anything on the album.

Scaretale - This is a very cool song. It features a very long instrumental build up, over 2 1/2 minutes long. It's not one of the most memorable of build ups, but it's still fine. However, after the instrumental portion, this song instantly becomes great. Anette's voice is so sexy in this song. I never want her singing to stop here. I wish there were more verses with her. I love the "burrrNiiing farms and squeeeEEEEEEEEEliiing...PIGS!" line in particular. Then Marco chimes in sounding like a circus ring leader, and takes the song in a new direction. This song is varied, and all parts are great. The Anette parts are just much better.

Arabesque - The first instrumental track of the album, and pretty short too. This piece makes me feel like gearing-up to go kick some ass. Very cool instruments in this song. I just wish it were either longer as an instrumental, or if the first 2:20 were the opening to a really epic song, rather than the way it cools down during the last 30 seconds. Regardless, it's still great, and I should be happy it even exists in the first place, since it wasn't really intended.

Turn Loose the Mermaids - While this isn't even my favorite song on the album, I almost feel like saying that this track is perfect the way it is. Anette's vocals are so clean, and there isn't a single spot where anything feels off. The music is the same way--every instrument usage feels so precise, and just the way it needs to be. It's such a beautiful song. And the best part of this song is when it takes on almost a western feel. It's absolutely incredible, and it makes me wish for them to make a song that is themed that way the whole length sometime.

Rest Calm - It took me a few listens for this song to really stick with me. I liked it, but I never really considered it overly memorable. To me, it feels like the most "regular" track. There isn't really anything for me to specifically point out. I just like the way it sounds. It's not boring by any means, because it goes through plenty of changes during it's 7 minutes.

The Crow, The Owl, and The Dove - Another pleasant sounding slower song. It has a nice mix of acoustic guitar and flutes. Marco's voice is really different sounding on this track at times, plus there is another male vocalist too. This song is definitely memorable for its different feel. It's grown on me a lot.

Last Ride Of The Day - Awesome track. The chorus is so amazing sounding. I love how it keeps gradually going up and down in pitch. I don't have much to say about this song. It's pretty straight forward, but one of my favorites.

Song Of Myself - When I first heard that this song would have a 6 minute poem recited at the end, I was a bit unimpressed at the idea of that. The first 7 minutes are very good. It has a particularly epic feel, even for this album. I love the music as the song starts to wind down before the poem. There is this build up of music that pauses, and then this metallic pound sound strikes back in with the music. Kind of a weird thing to describe, but it sounds super cool. Sometimes, depending on my mood, I'll stop the song right after this, and just pretend it was a 7 minute song. BUT, the poem portion isn't actually that bad. In fact, it's way better than I expected. If I'm in the right mood, I'll listen to the whole song. The poem is actually really pretty sounding. The music melds surprisingly well with the voices. And the fact that there are many different voices telling the poem make this way better, and gives it an emotional feel. Really this song both benefits and suffers because of the poem at the end. Sometimes it's just what I want, and other times, I'd rather just skip it.

Imaginaerum - The last track of the album, and the other instrumental. It's also the longest instrumental Nightwish track. Adding a medley is kind of an interesting choice. I mean I know they wanted it for the film credits, but to just sit and listen to a medley of all the stuff I just listened to at the end of an album...I don't know. I like the idea of it for a movie, but it's not quite as thrilling on an album. It sounds good, but it just doesn't bring anything new, and as such, I don't really care for it that much in comparison to everything else. Although I think the second half of the song is a lot better, and MUCH smoother sounding, it's still one of the weakest tracks.

1. Storytime
2. I Want My Tears Back
3. Last Ride Of the Day
4. Turn Loose the Mermaids
5. Scaretale
6. Song Of Myself
7. Rest Calm
8. The Crow, The Owl, and the Dove
9. Arabesque
10. Taikatalvi
11. Slow, Love, Slow
12. Imaginaerum
13. Ghost River

The top 5 are all amazing. 6-8 are great. 9-10 are really good, but just a little too short to rank over the other 8. 11 is good. 12 is decent. 13 not a huge fan.

Extremely happy with the album!

I need to start listening to more Nightwish, especially since Within Temptation is one of my favorite bands.

EDIT: You know what, Christmas is coming. What Nightwish albums should I seek?

My favorite two are Wishmaster and Oceanborn. The music was just so much more grandiose on those albums. After those two, they kind of toned down on both the operatic vocals and the overall musicality, as far as I'm concerned. Their two newest albums (Imaginaerum and Dark Passion Play) are with a new singer, so no operatic vocals at all. Century Child is probably their most mellow album (although Imaginaerum probably has the most soft songs of any album). Once is still good, but just not very memorable outside of a few songs. Angels Fall First is their first album and just... unpolished.

I figure I'll just rank their albums, too.

1. Wishmaster
2. Oceanborn
3. Dark Passion Play
4. Imaginaerum
5. Century Child
6. Once
7. Angels Fall First

7. Angels Fall First

The middle 3 albums in their discography - Wishmaster, Century Child, and Once.

One time, I went into FYE a long time ago (back in 2010) just to see what Nightwish albums they had. I saw every album there except for Wishmaster and Dark Passion Play. They also didn't have the "Over the Hills and Far Away" EP.

Once is my favorite album. It has 4 of my Top 5 favorite Nightwish songs.

Century Child is definitely my favorite album and I expect that album to be locked up permanently in that top spot for me. However, it only has 2 out of my Top 5 favorite Nightwish songs. The other 3 contains 1 song each from Wishmaster, Once, and Dark Passion Play.

Yay, looks like I'm a week late on this train...

It's not on iTunes for the US yet. The US release date (and Canada as well) is January 10th.

Oh. Boooo. Somebody remind me in a month.

I'm happy to hear Annette blends better this time around. I was rather pro-Tarja after hearing the last album. I'm not happy to hear Marco is singing more. I don't think he's anything special, and I enjoy hearing female singers. State-side, there aren't many (rock) bands with women in them, so I end up listening to stuff like Nightwish, WT, Lacuna Coil, etc.

I only have the one Within Temptation album, btw -- the most recent, The Unforgiving. I think it's awesome; found out about the band through Guitar Hero when they released "What Have You Done Now?" Any recommendations on where to go next?

I don't think Marco is being overused in this album. I counted a total of 6 tracks from Imaginaerum that have Marco singing. That's the same number of tracks from Dark Passion Play with Marco singing. For Once and Century Child, both albums have 5 tracks with Marco in it.

I guess you should go with "The Silent Force" album next.
