There aren't any actual rock formations near me (lol Florida) but I've been going to my school's rock wall a lot this semester, and it's pretty great. Most exercise routines bore me after a while because of the monotony, but climbing is just a perfect mix of mental stimulation (planning out the best route), athleticism (depending on the route and your style of climbing, it is possible to work muscle groups all over your body), and fun. Best of all, any improvement that you make is immediately visible and quantifiable.
Has anyone else given it a try?

What is this, some kind of joke?! Go, then. There are other worlds than these.
My brother is huge on rock climbing and hiking, so I've gone rock climbing with him a couple times. It's definitely VERY fun, and since my area is full of hills and mountains, there's tons of possibilities. Definitely an underrated activity.
