For those who don't know, OtherOS was a feature that came with older PS3 that allowed the installation of alternate operating systems like Linux. Sony released a firmware update that removed the feature which forced PS3 owners to make a choice between keeping OtherOS or continuing to use any features that required an updated firmware. A class action lawsuit was filed regarding Sony removing a feature that people have already paid for but it has failed.

The problem is that the plaintiffs could not prove that they were entitled to an ongoing relationship with Sony after the date of purchase, and they had the option of turning down the update and continuing their use of their Linux installations.

I don't understand this. Wasn't free online play one of their most advertised features? If you advertise free online play and OtherOS when selling the machine then make people choose one or the other, that's not sketchy?

But how long should a buyer expect continued service for? Surely not forever.

I would imagine Sony was advertising their online service with the disclaimer that it could end at anytime for any reason. Providing online service has an active cost involved so it's not something that you can reasonably expect to last forever.
