I've played a few, but really have no idea what the hell I'm doing. Whenever I read reviews they might as well be in a foreign language with all their talk of dialling combos, meter, gauges, stocks and cancels (often prefixed with things like 'Super' and 'Roman').
But, every so often I get the urge to try one out, so if I wanted to learn from the basics, where would be a good place to start?

You might want him to do just SSF2 first and not turbo since turbo brought in supers and SSF2 is the most advanced of the very very basic I can think of.

well, if you can wait a bit, skullgirls is supposed to have a really in-depth tutorial mode where it teaches you all the basic stuff modern fighting games assume you know

SF4 would be fine. Just remember that it cheats on inputs a lot so if you go from like SF4 to any other fighting game you might notice that it's harder to do specials. Shoudn't be an issue if you learn them right the first time but unlearning them takes quite a bit of time.
I would suggest either SSF2 or SF4. While MK is pretty good, I feel it's too different from most fighting games to be a good starting point.
