There was a law that started literally that day that prohibited dancing at the Jefferson Memorial. It was the result of a flashmob that some lady started there, that ended up disturbing the peace, and they had to arrest her. So basically they outlawed it there, to keep dumb **** like that happening there.

So basically, these people felt it was a fantastic idea to get a bunch of them together, on the one day that the police would be there to stop protests of that nature, and start breaking the law that just came into effect that day. If that's the video I think it is (just clicked on it to see the name of it), what you see is AFTER the police gave everyone multiple warnings to clear the area.

That law is dumb, but the cops' job isn't to decide if a law is dumb, it's to enforce the laws regardless. Harassing them about it is just going to get you trouble, as it rightly should since you're wasting the time they could be using to deal with real crimes.

Yeah an awful law but the cops are just doing their job. These people are idiots for dancing because they knew they could get arrested, they just felt like being rebels.

lol "just doing their job"

it's great that the cops don't even need to pass the blame themselves, the brainwashed public does it for them now I see.

If you accept that its the role of the police to judge which laws they feel like enforcing and which ones they don't...yeah do I even need to explain why that would be stupid?

lmao cops have to enforce the law. They can't say "this law is dumb" and ignore it. If they were warned by the cops and didn't stop, they deserve what they got. You don't do something the police JUST told you not to do, that's just idiotic and you should expect to get arrested.

This...

It's probably a rule due to stupidity long beforehand... and these people just taunted the police by keeping it up when they were given a warning... You don't question what you are asked/told not to do...

Nothing wrong with the cops in that old vid. Protesters knew what they were getting into.

I'm perfectly fine with them protesting the stupid law, and perfectly fine with the police arresting them for it. It is unfortunate that the actual message was largely lost.

Because a law that prohibits dancing within a 30-foot radius of something is the exact same thing as the ****ing Nuremberg Trials.

What the **** are you even talking about? Speeding tickets? Anybody who's not an idiot gets out of speeding tickets.

If you think a cop is getting out of anything worse than that, then you're an idiot.

...If those people really wanted to dance, and not just piss off cops for the sake of being rebels, they could have easily just walked like twenty feet to get out of the building and danced there. Nothing about this video says "aomg dancing is illegal now democracy is crumbling," it's just some very stupid people deciding it'd be funny to taunt cops and getting what they deserved.

Actually, choosing not to enforce a law happens pretty regularly, both in positive and negative ways.

Positive: the Egyptian military refused orders to shoot civilians during the Egypt protests.

Negative: sodomy laws in the USA, which prohibit any kind of sex that doesn't result in babies (so blowjobs, anal, etc) were almost never used against heterosexual couples, and almost exclusively used to arrest people for being gay.

Negative: I'm pretty sure I've gotten out of a traffic ticket in Georgia purely due to being female and acting kind-of clueless.

Look at it this way: There are no laws but those which the police enforce.

They most certainly can choose not to enforce laws. Doing so is not uncommon.

They, like all humans, have the ability and moral responsibility not to enforce injustice.

I should have said that the cops were in the right, those people were very obvisouly taunting the cops, espically the one guy in the white shirt. The couple was too, they danced RIGHT in front of him and smiled in his face.

What it boils down to is The law is stupid yes, but the people are also stupid since they knew excatly what they were doing and were just taunting the cops like I already said.

And since this was being taped by protestors who would broadcast these cops' faces to the world, the cops would have lost their jobs by doing nothing. Would it really be worth endangering your source of income and risk not being able to support your family over this trivial s***? This is not injustice. It's just dumb all around.

Okay, we'll leave the Nazi stuff out and use a more recent and apt example: pepper spraying peaceful protesters.

That one is an example of cops being terrible, yes. I totally agree that they have an obligation not to be immoral, but in this case they didn't cross that line. Except for the neck thing, and if they really did harm that guy that was screaming about a broken shoulder.

Every situation has to be judged on its own merit, cops are in general neither always blameless or always in the wrong when it comes to this sort of thing. Just like they have to make a choice about what to do, we have to make a choice about what is really deserving of protest and what isn't.

"The police are obligated to enforce all laws" is no excuse for enforcing immoral laws.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg_Trials

The problem is that there is simply no way to realistically not have this problem. There are obviously immoral laws that can exist, sure, but you can't draw the line because you're accepting that there *is* no line - the police are free to act according to their own conscience. Just a few examples of how that becomes problematic: speeding tickets are now even more of a cluster**** than they already are as every cop has free reign to choose what speed they think should be cracked down on, rape can be ignored by cops who think "she was asking for it" was valid, and so on. You might think one or both is immoral, but if you're leaving the enforcement of laws up to the individual officer, you guarantee these situations. You may say the way out is to not leave it up to each officer but instead up to some supposedly worked out standard...but tada, that's what the law is supposed to be, and if we can't make the legal system perfect as is, how are we going to agree on a backup to the legal system without it being every bit as messed up?

So Santa, it's their moral obligation to not arrest these people? These cops should risk the ire of their boss just so a bunch of confrontational jackasses can get out of an arrest and a $50 fine or whatever? Not worth it.
