The whole concept seems pretty silly to me. The underlying idea is something like "oh sure you have to decide what makeup to put on well people are STARVING in AFRICA" I guess

I've never seen anyone attempt to use it except annoying college white people and it's pretty weird. I wish it would go away.

this topic is a good example of a first world problem as well

Basically any problem you will ever have can be countered by PEOPLE ARE STARVING IN AFRICA

which is why people who do this are stupid. Stress and anger are all relative

I see it as a joke more directed to problems that are really not serious, rather than any problem less serious than starving in Africa. But I'm sure it's used badly, too.

Well, it's not always a bad idea to put your problems in perspective. People have a tendency to cause their own problems and stress. We get so wrapped up in everyday lifestyles it's easy to forget what's really deserving of importance.

I don't see it as some sort of ranking system. Of course starving in Africa is going to be on a level worse than a lot of other problems. It's not like a truly important problem can't be serious even if it still doesn't compare to starving in Africa. But if you take a step back to look at a problem, and you find that it's quite ridiculous and frivolous in the long run compared to some other things, then it's not wrong to want to let it go. I think people would make themselves a lot happier if they remembered that.

This isn't a "step back and think about your problems in the context of the world" thing. It's a "stop complaining, white person who lives in the suburbs! you don't have real problems!!" If you follow the link I think you'll pull that from the tone of the comments right after each picture. It doesn't even have to be a problem, a couple of those are just offhand comments that someone posted and made a snarky remark about.

In the context of something less overtly dumb, I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine about Lost in Translation, which I let her borrow. She said she had a problem caring about the characters because their problems just didn't feel substantial. White people issues. She said that maybe if it was about Mexican immigrant workers having a similar experience in America she'd be able to like it more. This isn't some idiot girl I know, she's quite bright. It wasn't the same eye rolling snark like the website I mentioned earlier, but she could not enjoy a movie because it was only about white people having existential issues. That is bizarre to me.

Wow that whitewhine site is awful. Hell I'm pretty sure some of the things they're posting up, the people aren't even actually complaining.

I think the first world problems joke can be done well in the proper context but a lot of people do use it to make themselves feel morally superior to others.
