Wow you're rude.

I'm really not wanting to respond to somebody who's just going to insult anybody who differs, but I will say that Other M sold significantly less than prior Meetroid games anyway. The Metroid games aren't crazy sellers, but they always do about 1.5-2 million. Other M hasn't even broken 1 million. Not even close. But it opened better than most games in the series, and suffered a colossal drop-off. You know what normally causes that pattern? Bad word of mouth. You know who caused the bad word of mouth? Fans.
1+1=2.

Edit: 79=/="well below 80". Hell, plenty of games score worse and sell fine. Now when half the people who play something hate it like there's no tomorrow...

Bad word of mouth happens if people dont like the game. Its not fans fault they dont like it. And usually people tend to care more about their own opinions.

Either way yoy said it was the number one reason which is bollocks.

You act like other m haters went on protest on the streets to vent their anger.

Bottom line is other m sold poorly because it wasnt What people wanted or liked.

And 79 is embarassing.

You have mario and link sitting on games with high 90's and theres samus with that pos.

79 is really good! The game received mixed reviews from critics, but mostly positive. I mean, it's not like there haven't been huge hits-even from Nintendo games-that have reviewed in the 70s. And not just high 70s either.

And really listen to yourself. You just called an 8/10 embarassing.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that word of mouth overstated the game's problems, and let's not kid ourselves. This is one of the most controversial games ever made. You cannot start a conversation about this game without a flame war emerging, and sometimes it happens when nobody even mentions the game to begin with. It was even more violent shortly after launch, with a huge storm of bile being thrown around from the haters. And people listen to that, and sales suffered.

What I'm saying is that haters overreacted to the game's problems.

Okay, I watched Gametrailers' review for this game last Monday and somehow, the review gave me nothing but good memories of the game. I know I had serious issues with it when I last played it, but still, just like I thought when I was actually playing it, I stared in disbelief that this game received a 2 out of 5 from someone. At the same time, I couldn't believe that Metroid Prime and even Zero Mission were part of the same franchise.

I agree on the opening cutscene wholeheartedly. I like Samus's voice in this game, but it does sound pretty annoying in the intro - and she has a LONG way to go before catching up with the likes of Leon Kennedy and Sarah Kerrigan in voicework quality. Then again, I like Tails' voice in Sonic Adventure so yeah (same problem there - annoying at times, but overall I'm fine enough). I also know for a fact that "average" voice acting never hurts a game's experience for me that much.

*spoilers*

I like Samus's personality in this game, but she really is made to look bad at times. You have been warned.

One thing saddening: back on Sunday, an episode of "Terra Nova" I watched reminded me far more of Other M than footage from actual Metroid games did. If something isn't wrong there, I don't know what is.

Also I'll admit that I imported the game from America back when it first came out. Pretty pricey, but I feel it was worth it and I don't buy many games anyway. The only game I've bought since Other M was RE4 way back in December 2010 - although to me RE4 is basically what MOM should've been, argh.

I also feel that too many "modern" Nintendo games get unfair hate - games like Metroid Prime, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and both Super Mario Galaxies don't deserve their loud hate-bases.

Other M itself, while actually pretty problematic, falls into the same category IMO. Like I said, watching GT's review made me stare in disbelief that this game received a 2/5 from somewhere (also, ironically, Gametrailers concluded that the game should satisfy hardcore fans of the series - which I personally agree with).

Yeah the authorization part was my least favorite aspect of the gameplay. It gets especially awful later. Pretty much the major reason why I don't think the game deserves any perfect scores (and it didn't get any from professional reviews - rightfully so). Since Corruption was my first Metroid game, the mere idea of Samus following direct orders from a GF superior wasn't so new to me at all, though, and it's not too hard to understand why Adam is "upset" with Samus.

I'll also mention that I got Other M with an army of wildlife documentaries, and I treated the game as a simple extra that happened to go really well with the documentaries. You can clearly see that I didn't care much for the characterization aspect of the plot.

For the record, both Metroid Prime and Super Metroid seemed to be quieter than most games I play when I replayed them last year. Imagine my surprise when I found that Other M fit into the same category. I was baffled by how little a departure Other M truly was from the rest of the series - IMO the game still does the usual Metroid stuff well, but fails spectacularly at trying to cover new ground, which is probably why I felt that way.

I enjoyed it a lot too. I had more issues with it than any other game I've played in the last few years, and it's my least favorite in the series (although more out of me liking every other game in the series a lot out of what I've played - speaking of which, don't Metroid fans hate Corruption generally?), but nothing deserving of a freaking 2 out of 5. I had that thought while I was playing the game, and I had that thought while I was watching Gametrailers' review back on Monday.

The game's opening sections are pretty piss. I literally screamed at my parents "what have they done to my beloved Metroid franchise?!" after my first session of the game. It gets much better later on though in every manner.

Open your Heart - it goes with everything, and it goes with this game too.

Prime is one of the most critically and fan lauded games of the last 10 years. Stop talking utter ****. That Lighting dude doesn't even know what he's talking about either. He thinks Other M sold badly because Fans went on a hate rampage and told everyone not to buy it. lol.

What I'm saying is that haters overreacted to the game's problems.

So? what has that got to do with anything? haters gonna hate. deal with it.

Lets keep things in perspective here. We all know why Other M Bombed. It's not rocket Science. If you enjoyed it good for you, i mean Tecmo spent time and mponey making it it's good to know someone enjoyed it.

The thing is i don't know ANY Metroid fans IRL. I'm not going to tell someone to ignore this game who wants something to play on their Wii's. My cousin is 14 and doesn't have other consoles he only has a wii so when this game came out and he was asking me about it i tod him he might enjoy it because it has action in it. He hasn't played a Metroid game in his life. I just let him buy my copy for a discount lol. Can't be giving money to Nintendo twice for this game.

Even if i did...if someone(who loved Metroid) came up to me and told me should i buy Other M i will give them a straight answer, Check it out but look for a bargain, but i hated the game. I do not tell people to NOT buy games that is NOT what haters do. It's not my money it's theirs.

EDITL Also TP does get hate, mainly from people on Zelda boards. I hate TP.

It reminded me that I have a soft spot for stylish moves in video games, and that was definitely a huge reason why I bought MOM. Much bigger than Samus's backstory anyway (which was the low point of the game despite being what was most marketed, argh).

How well do you think this song would fit with the game?:

And speaking of Metroid soundtracks, which game in the series do you think takes top honors there? Until very recently I would've sided with Super Metroid, but watching NintendoCapriSun's LP of Metroid Prime has made me side with the latter.

I watched two hours of NCS playing Metroid Prime earlier today and you know what? I still can't believe that Other M is in the same franchise. ARGH. It became even worse when I saw some fish tanks in the first Phazon Mines save room, at which point I thought of how painfully bland Other M's environments are in comparison for the most part.

It has sounds, but I wouldn't call that Music. Noise is the more appropriate definition

it has distinct design in it's harmony and timbre and sometimes rhythm, it's definitely music though obviously more minimal...and I don't even dislike minimalist music, metroid already had a lot of music falling into that category, other m's just isn't that good for the most part

And speaking of Metroid soundtracks, which game in the series do you think takes top honors there? Until very recently I would've sided with Super Metroid, but watching NintendoCapriSun's LP of Metroid Prime has made me side with the latter.

it's between super metroid and metroid prime for me, both soundtracks really define the series sonically though for different reasons. super metroid tends to use more commonly heard samples and uses a lot of esoteric composition to create it's otherworldly feel, odd meters, mixed meter, atonal, weird modulations etc. metroid prime on the other hand still uses a little of that but is a little more common in it's composition, but uses a lot of well programmed synthesizers to sound like music for an alien planet.

How well do you think this song would fit with the game?:

it almost works but I think the drums are a bit busy, tempo is maybe a few bpm too high, and some of the leads are a bit bright. I think this could easily be arranged into something that would be at home in a metroid game

I find the SMG games dull, though that's not a common opinion. And the new Zeldas get so much bashing, it's not funny.

Wind Waker? I love the game to death, but so many people couldn't get over the visual style. They took one look at it and thought 'oh that's dumb' and bam.

Twilight Princess gets a lot of hate because it's an underwhelming game, for the way it was hyped.

And Skyward Sword... I haven't heard too much about it. My best friend loved it, but I've also heard that some people like to dislike it.

And let's not even get into the DS games.

PUT MY TIME IN

Just a little bit. Enough to acquire the Diffusion Beam and begin writing this. So far, this game uhh... it does a lot of things that are dissuading me from moving forward. The most glaring problem for me is the control setup. Not only is it not very intuitive... it's also simply uncomfortable. Maybe I've just got fat gorilla hands or something, but a Wiimote is just too damn small and rectangular for two hands. I couldn't use the controller in this manner for NES games back in 2006, and it's every bit as burdensome and un-ergonomic today. With a quality controller, I can play for hours while forget the fact that my hands are actually holding something. I know right off the bat that Other M will not fill imbue my fingers with this loooooovely feeling.

To all the game designers out there reading this, here's a control protip: a gamer's left thumb is meant for the main analog stick or pad. It goes there and stays there. Glue the damn thing there if need be. It should not, under any circumstance, leave the warmth and security of its home territory to go press the A button to get Samus in morph ball mode. Fail fail fail. To ball-up with Samus, you either have to leave the D-Pad with your left thumb or journey about four inches across the controller with your right. Why did they opt to go with this whacked out setup? Was it supposed to be more immersive or something? It just feels weird. A control stick and a couple extra buttons could have evolved Samus into the Dante-slaying action star this game desperately wants her to be. As things are, she is clumsily plodding through this world as I am through the control scheme.

More thoughts in a bit.

yeah, Other M is super weird. the entire game is centered around that control scheme. every room, every enemy, every boss. I have no idea why they went for that. I think it's really interesting and totally broken at the same time.

sideways wii remote doesn't bug me though. my hands aren't that big and I've played a ton of NES so small controllers don't phase me.

I had next to no issues with the game's control scheme, and I remember enjoying switching between first- and third-person perspectives. The control scheme was the main reason I was hyped for the game (heck, I even replayed SM64 right before I got MOM to remind me - the irony of the former game popularizing analog control while the latter ditches it stuck to me - plus both games are the first games to give Mario and Samus any sort of spoken dialogue, although "It's a me, Mario" may be pushing it. I do personally see Samus's otherwise incongruous one-liner at the beginning of the game - "Mother! Time to go!" as an analogy for "It's a me, Mario!"), and for me, it delivered.

Although I told myself that "if the controls work, this will be the best game in the series" before release. Leave it to bland level design and awful design decisions to turn this into the worst game in the series despite the controls working for me.

Story - I knew coming in that it would be new for this series. I understand that Other M will try to present a younger, more inexperienced, more vulnerable and introspective Samus. She's not the experienced, battle-hardened hero we've seen in other games. I got that, and I actually didn't have a big problem with it if the game managed to handle that well. So far, I don't like the voice actress, but I'll deal. What's tougher to deal with, however, is authorization. Seriously, she, a freelance bounty hunter, needs authorization to use her powers? What a lazy and stupid way present the Metroid-style gameplay. I'd have preferred Samus slipping on a banana peel and her suit malfunctioning as a result.

Dialogue - whoa nelly, this is awkward. It's not Engrish or early 90s video game bad, but it's just weird and very unnatural. It's clearly Japanese and wasn't tackled by the best localization team. This is one of the reasons I'm wary of voice acting in mah Zelda - because I don't want it sounding like this. I wonder if Western game dialogue sounds as bad to Japanese players. I'm guessing it has to.

Graphics - They're fine. It usually takes some kinda special circumstance for me to complain about graphics.

Sound - The game is surprisingly quiet. The Prime games had some of the most unique soundtracks in gaming, blending what I can only describe as "techno meats organic" sounds to create their beats. Sadly, such beats seem to be absent here. Retro Studios is missed.
