Ugh, I hate ranking things like that though. It's so arbitrary. And so hard to compare across-genres...

25. Star Ocean: The Second Story (PSX)

Believe it or not, it was this game (not FF7) that was the first I played for the PSX, which I bought used a couple years after launch from a friend. He included about five games, this being the only JRPG, which is pretty much what I bought the console for. I've always had a tough time properly rating this game. I think that it's "system" is quite easily the best of any JRPG I've ever played. The battles are fun, the customization and item creation stuff is absolutely great, the skill system has just the right amount of depth, the private action thing where you can sort of create your own ending is awesome. The "execution" aspect of this game is damn near flawless.

The only problem is that it's a JRPG, and the simple fact of the matter is that you play JRPGs for the storyline, and this game has one that is abysmally horrible. For a long time, I considered it the worst storyline of any JRPG I'd ever played (you can thank Lost Odyssey for the change!) It's just sooooooooo cliche and stupid and the "twists" are dumb and predictable and, ugh, just so so bad. And yet, it still makes my list because it was just so much fun to play. If they would have taken a storyline that was even halfway decent and plugged it into the same engine, we'd be looking at a game that would probably be in my Top 3 easily. Instead, the wasted potential puts it down here at 25.

24. Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball (SNES)

Did I warn you that there would be sports games? Well, there will be sports games. It's entirely possible that I logged more hours on this game than on any other SNES game. It's just so goddamn fun! One of the most purely fun sports games that exists. I'm not sure whether it's the somewhat-cartoonish but still kinda plausible character art, the awesome primitive voice acting by the umpire "HE'S OUT!!!" or what, but the game is just so fun to play. The most entertaining that baseball is capable of being, period. I always played as the White Sox because they were so damn OP. I must have played through at least four or five full seasons and it never really stopped being fun, without being too over-the-top arcadey (think NFL Blitz and the spin-offs for various other sports it inspired).

23. Dead or Alive 2: Pirated Japanese Edition (DC)

So, when I was in high school a couple of my good friends were heavy into the piracy scene, which meant that we had access to pretty much every PSX and DC game we could ever want. Somehow, we got our hands on some Japanese version of DOA2 and it became our default multiplayer/party game for a good 1-2 year period after the PSX/N64 were obsolete, but before the PS2/Xbox really caught on. I never played the American version, so I don't really know what's all different. According to one friend, there were more costumes (I'm assuming the infamous Tina "rape costume" was not in the American version) and some of the cinematic were a little less censored, but I can't really say for sure.

Anyway, this game was my favorite fighting game ever by far. We always played random vs random and what made this game great was that you didn't have to memorize a bunch of crazy moves to have any hope of defeating someone who did. We had one friend who was hardcore about it, memorized all the moves for every character, and won most of the matches, but with a favorable matchup and/or some good luck, the rest of us could probably beat him about 25% of the time. I've always sucked at fighting games, but I actually felt pretty decent at this one, probably because of how heavily reliant it was on the counter system, which was based on intuition and "feel" rather than advanced button combinations. Since we played on random, we never really had any mains, but Gen Fu, Ayane, and Helena were my favorites to use.

22. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (PC)

So, this one is really serving as a representative of nearly all of the DOS-era LucasArts graphic adventure games, of which I played pretty much all of them and really enjoyed most of them. I'm going to be doing this "representative" thing a lot and I know it's kind of cheating but whatever. These games were my first introduction to PC gaming and Indy was probably the first one I played and beat. My other two favorites that might have made their way onto the list are Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders and The Secret of Monkey Island.

But Indy wins due to sheer awesomeness and the fact that it's slightly more serious/realistic than the others. Also there's some really early voice acting that's surprisingly decent. The plot isn't necessarily the best one to ever grace a videogame, but I do think they did an excellent job of crafting a plot that totally seems like it could be a real Indiana Jones movie. They capture the essence of the franchise almost perfectly. To this day I'm still amazed that they never decided to go ahead and make a movie out of this, because we all know it would have been pretty damn amazing. Also, the whole "multiple paths" thing adds replay value in a way that is incredibly uncommon for these types of games.

My favorite memory from this game was the first time I died in it. Kerner was holding you hostage and I selected the dialogue option of "You're bluffing" because it hadn't dawned on me that death was really possible. Of course, he responds by shooting you and saying "I never bluff." I was so surprised! It was great.

Not really. Mortal Kombat 2 would probably make the Top 50 for nostalgia purposes alone (played it with my cousins quite a bit) and MAYBE Street Fighter 2 because back in the day everyone played Street Fighter 2, but in general fighting games are probably my least favorite genre.

21. Sonic Adventure 2 (DC)

Already second-guessing myself. Feel that this is probably too high or maybe shouldn't be on at all. It's a very good game, probably the most polished game to ever come out for the Dreamcast. It was certainly a lot of fun (particularly the Sonic/Shadow levels), but what I enjoyed the best was collecting all the different kinds of the emblems in various levels by meeting different objectives. I spent a lot of time on that, and it's a lot of fun (if not pretty derivative of SM64). Also, this game deserves some credit for being one of the few (only?) DC games to actually realize Sega's supposed original intention for the VMU, which is to say that you actually COULD take it out, play Chao Adventures while on the go, and advance your game in a meaningful way (which I actually did).

20. Goldeneye (N64)

I feel like this game gets something of an undeserved bad rap. We all know how amazing it was back when, and how it was the multiplayer game of choice for basically an entire console generation. I think that it sort of gets marginalized as "just" that. Just a fun party game that people played because there wasn't anything better. We can look at Halo and stuff today and say "Man, Goldeneye was so bad, there were framerate problems and you had to play on split-screen and the N64 controller sucked" and so on and so forth. But for the time it was just amazing, and I don't wanna hear from any PC-gaming elitists about how PC FPS were so much better. It just wasn't the same, okay.

I also think the Single Player was pretty damn good and everyone seems to forget that. I won't claim it was the first game ever to implement "mission objectives" within FPS levels (as in, things you have to accomplish besides reaching the end of the level and/or killing everyone). Those were a lot of fun. The fact that they would get added as you increased difficulty levels gave the game a lot more replayability. You wanted to replay this game again on a higher difficulty because you were getting more than just "the same game but now you take more damage." Also the specific objectives for unlocking cheats were interesting and fun, the levels themselves were fairly varied and interesting (especially for that time and era).

I really do think that overall it was just a highly excellent game, probably the best multiplayer game of its era with a damn compelling single player experience, too!

Goldeneye's an incredibly underrated singleplayer experience on GameFAQs, I think. The difficulty levels were great, differing mission objectives were great, good variety of weapons (and you didn't worry about hording ammo level to level so you'd actually use them...). And as much as I normally decry the N64 controller, it actually works decently for FPS, and I really liked how this game handled aiming control-wise (most FPSs just seem to use a "fire in the direction you are looking"). I don't even care much about the multiplayer (though it's not bad)! I legitimately think it's the best game on the Nintendo 64 (I'd imagine Perfect Dark would have a case if I played more of that, but it's at a disadvantage without the Bond licenes and music!), and am kinda saddened that as GameFAQs has gotten younger the talk has become all about Mario/Zelda/Star Fox, all games I was unimpressed by. Oh well. Great to see it on the list, regardless.
