I remember something on the news about people seeing him almost as a god. There were even myths about his birth. I forgot the specifics, but I remember it being something unrealistic.

So, I could see it making sense if they did see him as a great person, some sort of superhuman, or as a god. I guess.

It's more you 'must' treat him like some kind of god, or the police will make you disappear. If there's an image of him, a painting or statue or whatever, you're not allowed to stand directly in front of it. You have to keep moving

If you spend years being brainwashed into thinking one guy is a living legend and your only chance against the evil outside world, you're not gonna take it well when he suddenly dies and his subordinates tell you his son is just as good.
