most of this stuff would be illegal to do in many other countries, especially the hate speech, but if you live in america, you can be as ignorant as you want without being punished for it. except be ridiculed by most other people but they can't do anything about it.

Societal forces are far stronger than the government when it comes to stuff like hate speech and cousin marriage and such. Being ridiculed and chastized for ignorance and such is usually enough to make people change. The only problem is that lately in America there has been a huge "anti-offensiveness" trend that makes people believe they have a right to not be offended or questioned or doubted at all, so you have a ton of ignorance that is going unopposed.
