Even though there have been tons of bad games to come out between their years, no other game has been a disappointing sequel that pissed the fans off and managed to garner such high ratings from the review sites.

FFTA wasn't so much controversial as it was just a bad game

Other M at least still is good game at its core

I actually enjoyed FFTA; it probably helped that I hadn't played FFT at the time, so I didn't have such high hopes.

I've never had the chance to play FFT, but I enjoyed FFTA my first time through. I couldn't make it through a replay though.

You're assuming I'd give it an 8/10!

My score, minus the storyline, would be 6/10. The story plunges it down to a 3.

At it's core? FFTA is FFT at it's core. It's a stupid plot and a tacked on law system that people most often complain about.

Yeah, FFTA is a great game from a gameplay perspective. It's the story people take issue with.

FFTA isn't at all like FFT at the core.

Well, I mean, to someone who just glances yeah it is, but that's like saying Wayne's World and Super Mario Brothers 3 are the same game at the core. There's a lot more wrong with FFT:A than the laws and the plot.

Here are some things that are wrong with it that aren't laws:

- Way easier. Lack of crystalization on death is a problem but not the only one.
- Job system is a lot more limited. Way less job combos due to the stupid race thing. Non-action abilities less interesting. Less action abilities.
- Less balanced, and FFT isn't exactly the most balanced thing-- but at least creativity was needed rather than just "unlock broken ability A and abuse" was required to break it for the most part
- Learning abilities based off of items is annoying
- Spells no longer have to charge and so feel similar to ranged weapons
- Not positive on this one but it feels like the accuracy system isn't as well done as FFT. Pretty sure back arcs don't matter as much (if at all?). It's been a while since I played this and FFTA2 might've fixed this.
- Wayyyy too many pointless filler battles, and they're necessary to do if you want items. You may claim this is the same as story but I don't think so.

I could name more I'm sure.

Well when someone says "at it's core" I think there are talking about the actual engine. FFTA's core is literally the same as FFT. All those issues are issues of how the engine is utilized.

There are some fundamental gameplay differences there I listed such as lack of charge time on spells though. If you said it had the Tactics Ogre engine you'd be closer to correct, but still wrong in some ways.

Like I said it's like Wayne's World vs Super Mario 3.

FFTA does not use the CTB system, so no.

What I would call "engine" differences.

- Ability learning system.
- Races existing
- Spells/CT
- Accuracy
- Death or lack thereof

Everything else I'll give you as an execution error, but the game still feels significantly different with those changes alone. The charge time in particular is especially significant.

FFTA felt good to me, never played FFT before either though.

Never finished either of them though, the SRPG genre doesn't do much for me.

Super Paper Mario?

A not-well-received FF game by the time FF13 came out was hardly news. FFX-2 and FF12 predate it. (And FF13 is probably better liked than those two honestly).

Super Paper Mario wasn't bad, unless you went into it expecting an RPG. As long as you expected a Metroidvania, it was pretty solid at that, and has the best plot in the series.

Isn't it kind of the point that all of these games mentioned were good in their own right but just absolutely not what the fans of the series expected or wanted?

Super Paper Mario was fine as a game if you're into that kind of metroidvania thing, if you're into Paper Mario and expected Paper Mario you could legitimately dislike it.
FFXII the same, fine as a western MMO style RPG. Cold and unfamiliar as a Final Fantasy game. FFX-2 I'm sure is also great if you're a fangirl who likes lighthearted rpgs segmented into short bubbly quests.

Other M was much the same, as someone not big into the Metroid catalog I thought it was an ok 8/10 game. It did something different, was relatively enjoyable and I respect that. If I were an avid follower of the Metroid series I'd probably be disgusted by the dialogue, inconsistencies and mediocrity of the gameplay.

All good games when looked at objectively but poor when considering their target market.
