They're generally not hard to get, but if you fail you have to do the whole stage over again, which is really f***ing obnoxious. It also places an overemphasis on the tanooki suit, since it's much easier to get the flags with one. It's just mostly pointless but there's such a large punishment if you fail it...

"Go through the whole level again" would be a problem if the levels were actually LONG. Length generally tends to come from getting star coins, which you DON'T have to redo. As for the tanooki suit... that's the whole game. EVERYTHING'S immensely easier with the suit. Ironically, the scarf upgrade that's what probably SHOULD be called the tanooki suit is rather useless compared to the normal version, since it's benefits are basically irrelevant.

But yeah, gold flags and having to beat levels again with Luigi are both pretty obnoxious ways to stretch out the game's length. As was going back to an unchanged version of World 8's 2nd castle after the end of the special worlds to "finish everything" again. It's a shame since apparently, the REAL final level is actually awesome.
