The equivalent to the Noble Nine of old, before Crono weakened and Link became completely unbeatable instead of "Cloud at least has one win on him."

Obviously Mario and Sonic, but who else? Was Link big enough back then, or did he only get that powerful because of OoT?

LTTP was pretty big.

Pac-Man and Donkey Kong would probably be pretty popular.

He wouldn't be above Mario and Sonic, though, would he? Mega Man would be the same, I imagine. Would Samus still be this big? Snake existed at this point, but MGS hadn't come out, so he'd be irrelevant, wouldn't he? And Cloud, Sephiroth, and Crono didn't exist.

And...Ryu and Ken would beat most of that list. As would Scorpion and Sub Zero.

I don't see Kefka doing much of anything; RPGs weren't really mainstream yet.

No way in hell Pac-Man or Donkey Kong are above Mario. Pac-Man was aready fading by that time.

Speaking of, Yoshi would crush basically everyone on this list except for Mario and Sonic. (And even with those two I'm not sure). Yoshi fans in the early 90s were freakish (and then he wasn't in a Mario game for about 10 years, and most people forgot about him).

Luigi would also be a bit of a beast. There were a lot of old NES fans who insisted on playing with Luigi, and SMB2 was still pretty new.

Fox might be pretty big at that point; like...Star Fox was a much more popular game than LttP at the time.

I'm seriously skeptical about Kain doing anything. Like...he'd be weaker in 1995 than, say, Dante is today.

Kirby might be decently powerful, though. He was a lot more mainstream, as opposed to these days when it's "only established Kirby fans buy Kirby games".

I would expect some Virtua Fighter characters to show up, and then most of the voters failing to recognize them by picture even though they like the game >_>

Warcraft II was pretty hot at the time, but I don't think it produces a strong character. Same with like...a lot of stuff--do the people from Contra have a name? Double Dragon's characters do, and I think they'd do alright, but they'd be...just below NN I think.

Guybrush Threepwood. He would have been a hell of a lot stronger back then, at least.

Right in the middle of the series, before the genre fell out of favour, in the fairly early days of the internet when it was reserved for PC geeks who would DEFINITELY have played at least one Adventure, while console fans were still buying strategy guides rather than looking up answers online.

Mario would 80-20 Link, I'm pretty sure.

The hardcore high-fantasy people were off playing Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, anything Mario was solid gold at the time, and LttP is like...the lowest-selling early Zelda game. (He'd get some popularity from his better-selling NES games, but half the people who played the first one thought his name was Zelda, so he's going to have some recognition problems).

Hmm...good point.

King Graham might make some noise too, although I've never seen much indication that GameFAQs is aware of the King's Quest series at all, so it'd probably be more midcarder. (KQ was more of an 80s series anyway--by 1995 it was falling in popularity).

The site was scarcely established in 1995. I think it would be more interesting to guess on what the strongest characters would have been when the PotDs first started in, what, 1999?

For interests' sake, here was a poll in December of '99:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3

How would you tier the top characters at that time?

I would expect Mario to be on top. OoT really put Link over. He would have been strong, but not nearly as strong as post-OoT. I also agree that Yoshi, the ninjas and the shoto twins would have been much stronger in those days, as others have mentioned. I'm also tempted to say that Earthworm Jim would have been at least a solid mid-carder and that Tekken might have had a couple of decent showings in say Kazuya and Heihachi.

In '99 Cloud and Sephiroth would destroy anything in the contest. The guides for FFVII was the reason this site became popular in the first place, and it was the top game on the site for like five years straight.

QB Eagles is Randall Cunningham. Or to be more specific, he's fictional quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles replacing Randall Cunningham, who was not a member of the player's union and couldn't be included in Tecmo Super Bowl as a result.

I really doubt fighting games would be big on this site back then. You have to remember what the demographics are for a FAQ site (or at least what they were before it grew into more of a community than a FAQ site like it is now).

Pac and Donkey should be lower, yeah. I was thinking 1995 was longer ago than it actually was. I forgot just how man Mario Bros. games were out by that time.

I was going to put Kirby on the list, but I looked and Kirby Super Star wasn't until a year later, so I just left him off.

Fighting games were huge everywhere back then. They were the arcade games, and had ports to both SNES and Genesis (one of the very few popular multiplatform games).

And fighting games back then totally needed FAQs. It's not a modern fighter that tells you how to perform your moves. People would buy guides just to find out how to perform certain Fatalities, and then keep them secret so that they would be the **** when they performed it at the arcade and nobody else knew how.

There was basically a four way platform race that went...

SNES: Mario
Genesis: Sonic
Arcades: Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat
PC: DOOM

Note that GameFAQs has generally trended older--people who have internet access, and who can type and read, and you're supposed to be 13 to get on GameFAQs. SNES and Genesis were more what the younger kids played (that and Gameboy). Teenagers were more into arcades. College students were more into PC. (With quite a bit of overlap, but that was the rule of thumb).

If the GameFAQs average age of this hypothetical version of GameFAQs was teenager, I'd actually expect fighting games to be pretty dominant. Like...if anyone's going to beat Mario, Ryu might do it.
