When Ramza appears after it's been established that that's impossible, is uh

Is he actually there? Or is it a ghost? Or a hallucination or what?

Up to speculation, but I think it's the Zodiac stones.

There's no consensus. My own perspective is that Ramza is alive, because I think it's more likely that the game pulls a fake-out death followed by a "they're really alive" than for it to kill them and then fake them being alive. (How are they still alive? Zodiac Stones, presumably.)

Yes, because Chapter 1 Ramza and Chapter 4 Ramza are exactly the same in every way.

My word, how could I fail to see that Ch1 Ramza and Ch4 Ramza are completely different people! I suppose the sprite should have been a dead giveaway, really.

Or maybe they're the same guy at different times, and we can reasonably expect them to have some things in common.

Of course it's reasonable to have them expect them to have some things in common.

You know, except for the stuff where Ramza clearly develops and progresses as a character, like learning to face trials and responsibilities head on instead of running away when things got too hard.

No big deal.

I'm pretty sure Ramza's dead and you're seeing him in some sort of afterlife with Alma. He and Delita are the ones who declared their principles - that they would try to do the right thing without exploiting or sacrificing other people for the cause. Ramza upholds his vow when he goes after Alma and rescues her from the Lucavi, even though they are both killed. Delita has a relationship with Ovelia but by comparison throws it away. He makes promises to her at that temple that he fails to keep, instead choosing to use other people on his way to becoming king, and she recognizes his hypocrisy during the epilogue. There he wonders what Ramza got out of the bargain. Seeing them after the funeral, it is shown that Ramza's family lineage is broken and his deeds are forgotten by history, but he is content because he upheld the principles he set forth for himself.

Yes, he really does a good job in Chapter 4 of living up to the duty that his noble status requires of him. Except not. Family is important to Ramza, but he doesn't care about the duties of his station, and we see that back in Ch1. So what is there to keep him in Ivalice?

Lategame Ramza clearly looks out for his sister as a top priority, and other people in general as a strictly secondary concern. Consider what he does and doesn't do with the Germonik Scriptures. At the end of the game, if he and Alma are alive, then they have just barely escaped being killed by the Lucavi through a holy miracle, plot hole or what have you. It is entirely in character for Ramza to say "I'm going to protect Alma, the rest of the world can go hang". He's already done it more than once.

He's not quite as much a one track character as you're making him out to be. He also has a major goal of stopping the war. Remember, at the start of Ch 4 he believes that Alma is being held in Limberry. After going to Zeltennia and meeting Delita, he has a perfect opportunity to continue straight on to Limberry and rescue Alma. But instead he backtracks all the way to Bethla because he's handed what he thinks is a big opportunity to stop the war. That said, I agree that if he were alive at the end of the game he would have no problem dropping out of the picture for good. He's accomplished all of his goals. Alma is rescued, the evils behind the Zodiac stones are defeated, and Ivalice is at peace. His brothers and his former liege are dead. There's nothing left to tie him to Ivalice. It makes perfect sense for him to take Alma and get the hell out of Dodge.

More or less accidentally. He killed Dycedarg because Dycedarg turned into a giant goat and tried to kill him first, Dycedarg had already killed Larg, and on the other side of the war, Delita killed Goltana. That was basically it for the war
