Then you could play the optional parts of the game!

I think it would work out for both parties.

D a game shouldn't make you grind at all. Make things actually difficult, not time consuming if you want to hand out big, coveted rewards. Anyone is capable of sitting on their ass and doing the same thing over and over for hours, make people have to be good for cool stuff.

I think Dragon Quest would lose some of its charm if I didn't have to grind endlessly for bosses.

We share a lot in common, then. My mind when idle is not always fun so I have taken great comfort over the years in endlessly grinding in games like Disgaea, Pokemon, and Dragon Quest.

It is why JRPGs are my favorite genre!

I enjoy grinding when I just need something to do while I think/look within myself. It's meditative. But it shouldn't be a mandatory part of the game, I think.

It's kinda hard to say when a game expects you to grind.

I generally have to never grind because I always battle a little more than I should.
For example, instead of going from Point A to Point B in a dungeon as fast as I can, I not only explore everything to get every treasure, I might even stick around and put a few more battles under my belt if I have the resources.

Or better yet if I find a battle in which the enemies drop more exp than is necessary for their difficulty, I'll stick around there for a bit. It adds up.

D if we talk about RPGs. People who thinks that you should never ever grind are just lazy.

However I've seen a trend in recent games where I can replay a stage over and over again just to get stronger, and then move on to the next stage. That sucks ass since I'm the kind of person who can't resist to abuse that!

C, but it's a really fine line. You shouldn't be able to just blindly rush through a game without grinding or putting any thought into anything. However, the game should be difficult enough that doing bosses should be a challenge and should require tactical strategy or something in the absence of grinding. Plus there is also games like Persona 3 that definitely require grinding and do it really well.

What should be avoided at all costs is a situation where the gamer reaches a certain point and suddenly finds that they have to grind for an hour to advance.

EDIT: clarification

This is not a lazy vs not-lazy thing.

Some people just don't find monotonous tasks entertaining. Some people find the idea of being rewarded for monotonous tasks fun. Some people just want to be able to play a game while their mind is elsewhere sometimes.

Calling this a laziness thing is like saying people who don't play action games are lazy.

Disagree. MMOs and JRPGs like SMT Strange Journey would be stupid without grinding. It's a good model for other games.

Also, you are absolutely grinding if you're trying to get better at a hard part of the game by doing it repeatedly.

If the alternative means that you can run from battles, get no experience, and still beat bosses, then yes, you should be forced to grind. A reasonable amount of dungeon exploration and battles should sufficiently prepare you to advance, but "reasonable" is subjective to begin with.

I'd say a "proper" amount of battles would be just fighting every battle you go through while on your way towards your goal, and not having to camp one area to gain XP.

not really

grinding in RPGs is pretty much mindless and the game rewards you not for "getting better at playing the game" but just by plugging away at one thing that is also static and making the character/s you control stronger through an experience system or what have you

unlike, say an action game like Devil May Cry or God Hand where your character doesn't necessarily get any stronger just by repeating a hard segment over and over but you, the actual player, learn to adapt to an enemy's pattern or come up with new combos to deal more damage more efficiently or gain quicker reflexes and things like that

what is commonly agreed upon to be "grinding" is my first example

the second example, which, mind you, can be applied to some RPGs that actually have battles that can't be overcome by just getting the highest level, is more like practicing (or dying over and over again till you figure out a strategy or just get better >_>)

Dragon Quest 8 was amazing

until I had to grind for like 10 hours.

I'm still glad I played it, but it seriously could have done with less grinding.
