I actually mean something very specific, I'm talking console-style deathmatch shooters in the vein of Goldeneye, Timesplitters, and Halo. Stuff where you just run around and shoot people who aren't you. I'm not as interested in cover based shooting and TF2-style stuff. Are there any modern games that fit the bill? Preferably for console but PC is an option too.
oh right, Quake Live. tried to get my friends into that last time I asked about something similar to this, but the way Quake works specifically didn't do it for them I think.
isn't CoD pretty different? I haven't played it but it doesn't look like it plays the same way as 007/Timesplitters/whatever.
The whole perks/customization thing is different, but in terms of how the game is played it's closer to 007/Timesplitters/whatever than it is to BF or TF2 or GoW

Although I would say Halo is even more similar due to being able to pick up weapons around the map and no killstreaks or anything like that, but Halo doesn't work for some reason? Reach is pretty recent...

I think Serious Sam 3: BFE is like that, since it's a throwback to the shooters you're describing, but I've personally only seen game modes like Survival be played on it. It's worth checking out at least.

I'm not sure why Halo doesn't work. My friends say it's not charming like Timesplitters but I don't think we'll find anything like that anyway. In any case thanks, I will pick up whatever the most recent CoD is and see how that goes. Might pick up Halo Reach anyway despite their reservations as well.
Any Unreal Tournament game. The original 1999 GOTY one is still my favorite FPS game out there, even if the graphics are dated. They're nowhere near modern looking, yet more than definitely bearable and actually rather decent considering when it came out.
There's that one for the PS2 I believe, and a few more updated ones for the PC. Or Unreal Tournament 3 for the 360 and PS3, which I believe has online play, as well as offline deathmatch (rather than just having the story mode).
He said he wanted Goldeneye style (machine guns and pistols) and not Quake style (rockets and shotguns) but yeah Unreal Tournament is really damn awesome
Eh if you want charming as well, then you're out of luck. Modern Warfare is pretty much designed to be soulless. Even a game like Battlefield 3 has way more charm. TF2 is the king in that aspect though, of course.
