I have an Asus Republic of Gamers with Core i7, 16 Ram, and a TB of memory. Granted, I overkill everything, so I'll point out if you want the i7 and over 500, get a desktop.

probably so they can run programs that tablets can't. And also because every single tablet keyboard is the worst thing ever.

Clearly never used the Asus Transformer pad.

Anyway, not true, the Blue Verve case with built in BT Keyboard for iPad is awesome.

what if we don't have a desk

If you legit don't have a place to put it, that is the only acceptable reason to own a Laptop. And you should be using that as a substitute desktop. While using your tablet, for what you would use a Laptop/Netbook for.

Copy pasting a part of the wikipedia article on this subject. Disadvantages of tablets outweighs advantages

Advantages
Usage in environments not conducive to a keyboard and mouse such as lying in bed, standing, or handling with a single hand.
Lighter weight, lower power models can function similarly to dedicated reading devices like the Amazon Kindle.
Touch environment makes navigation easier than conventional use of keyboard and mouse or touch pad in certain contexts such as image manipulation, musical, or mouse oriented games.
Digital painting and image editing are more precise and intuitive than painting or sketching with a mouse.
The ability for easier or faster entry of diagrams, mathematical notations, and symbols.
Allows, with the proper software, universal input, independent from different keyboard localizations.
Some users find it more direct and pleasant to use a stylus, pen or finger to point and tap on objects, rather than use a mouse or touchpad, which are not directly connected to the pointer on screen.
[edit]Disadvantages
Higher price – convertible tablet computers can cost significantly more than non-tablet portable PCs although this premium has been predicted to fall.[72]
Input speed – handwriting or typing on a virtual keyboard can be significantly slower than typing speed on a conventional keyboard, the latter of which can be as high as 50–150 WPM; however, Slideit, Swype and other technologies are offered in an effort to narrow the gap. Some devices also support external keyboards (eg: iPad can accept Bluetooth keyboards and USB keyboards through iPad Camera Connection Kit Dock Connector-to-USB adapter. Apple has also released a keyboard dock)
Ergonomics – a tablet computer, or a folded slate PC, does not provide room for a wrist rest. In addition, the user will need to move his or her arm constantly while writing.
More knowledge of the programs is needed – because information on e.g. icons isn't obtained by pointing at them. (The Compaq Concerto from 1992 didn't have this weakness.)
Weaker video capabilities – Most tablet computers are equipped with embedded graphics processors instead of discrete graphics cards. In July 2010, the only[citation needed] tablet PC with a discrete graphics card was the HP TouchSmart tm2t, which has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5450 as an optional extra.
Business-oriented tablet personal computers have been slow sellers from 2001 to date.[73]
Screen risk – Tablet computers are handled more than conventional laptops, yet many are built on similar frames; in addition, since their screens also serve as input devices, they run a higher risk of screen damage from impacts and misuse.
Hinge risk – A convertible tablet computer's screen hinge is often required to rotate around two axes, unlike a normal laptop screen, subsequently increasing the number of possible mechanical and electrical (digitizer and video cables, embedded WiFi antennas, etc.) failure points.[citation needed]
Smaller display and lack of keyboard.

Most of those are not true anymore, flat out LIES (Tablets costing more than Notebooks) not important, for videophiles, or absolutely not involved in the conversation (why do I care if they are slow sellers, what does that actually have to do with the product).

The legit ones on there are

Input speed, especially if your job requires that speed.

Screen risk.

For what I use my computer for, a laptop is strictly superior to a desktop (well, aside from price I guess). I don't do anything that requires mad processing power, but I greatly like being able to take my computer with me when I travel, stay at my parents' for a few days, etc. Heck, I love it just around the home, so I can take it to different rooms if I'm cooking, watching TV, hanging with friends but still want to keep an eye on hockey scores, etc.

Tablets have pretty obvious disadvantages to both, although I'll probably get around to getting one eventually.

Eh, $250 for a device light enough to carry wherever that I can type on perfectly on my lap/desk that can dual bott Windows 7 (for tabbed applications and actual multitasking and compatibility with programs), and Ubuntu (for programming).

Also USB ports that I can actually attach things to without $30 adapters.

Some of us don't live in our parent's basement and therefore need reasonably powerful computers that are portable. Hence, laptops.

Netbooks are for people on a really tight budget and don't have parents who will just buy their special snowflake child whatever he or she wants.

tablets are so rubbish.

Laptop all day every day. I don't think I've had anything more satisfying to type on than my laptop's keyboard, and when you write as much as I do, that is very important.

I remember the first time trying to type something on my buddy's tablet. Awful.

I use a laptop for school and work. Show me a tablet that can run Visual Studio 2010. Do it. Don't cheat and use one of those old tablets that are just a laptop with a touchscreen, show me a legit tablet.

Also, I need to use Microsoft Office. Not some app that can try to do what Office does, I mean the program that Microsoft makes. Go on.

That's not even mentioning all the games and stuff that I have that require Windows, or at least an OS for a personal computer.

I'm not trying to say that tablets are crap. It is just that laptops can do so much more for me, and my Android smartphone covers the rest. I don't see much of a reason to spend $400 on a tablet. For $100, it would be a fun toy, but I just can't really justify a tablet. Sure, I'd like to get one, but I just can't replace my laptop just yet.

Also I guarantee MWC's tablet is nearing or above $1000.

Spending that much on a laptop can get you specs which would murder his super tablet.

I guess saying tablets are rubbish is maybe harsh. They are certainly cool, and they can have neat uses and all, but you have to look at them as a sort of separate entity from laptops, I think.

Laptops are better for content creation, tablets are better for content consumption. That seems to be the general rule I've noticed.

Nothing wrong with that. The lines are blurred of course. Still, I don't see many good video editing or book publishing apps on tablets.

Even in this aspect, it would be personal preference at best (ignoring cost).

I can get flash on my netbook. I can use a USB mouse on my netbook. I can use keyboard shortcuts to access my content that don't involve my hand reaching across a screen. I can have multiple windows up simultaneously if I want to go on b8chat, watch youtube, type an e-mail, and follow a slideset for my class (in which I am productive as hell, as you can tell) all at the same time.

Of course. However, I was talking more about the average casual user. It seems to me that a lot of people tend to just use one program at a time and don't multitask. Most "multitasking" is just switching one full-screen program for another or playing music while doing something else. At least, that's what I have noticed with people that do not use computers that much outside of work.

Many people are also not that familiar with keyboard shortcuts and the like. I've still met plenty of people that think I am a wizard for using copy/paste with keyboard shortcuts.

For people that just care about Facebook, YouTube, e-books, and Angry Birds, I definitely see tablets as a possibility of replacing a laptop. I actually use the window feature in Windows, I use keyboard shortcuts, I use mice (when I can, anyway), and I use programs that just work better (or at all) on a laptop. Therefore, laptops are better for me.
