That's somewhat of an urban legend, but it makes sense from a booking standpoint.

I'm not sure what the disparity is between what SmartMuffin thinks the perception of Eddie was pre-death vs. post-death.

Eddie was an amazing wrestler, but his death did Hero-ize him. I love the guy and would love to see him keep working, but people still chanting him and him getting pops for Rey and things like that aren't really something that adds up. We all loved the guy, but he wasn't Rock or Austin or anything.

I'll give you the smarks, but to the marks, he was just another pretty good wrestler with a couple title wins. Then he died and suddenly became this legend virtually overnight. Don't get me wrong, he was plenty good, and we have every reason to believe that if he hadn't died he'd have put in another solid decade and would then easily be in contention for "legend" status.

But, you know, that didn't happen.

I don't see him as some mark legend. I think they remember him fondly because of his final two years, and now he's eternally in that 2004/2005 hyper-entertaining state to them, but I don't think to the casuals he's lionized or anything.

WWE cashed in on the death while it was still hot off the griddle, and now they don't go out of their way to even mention him (although when they do I'll admit they place him on a higher kayfabe plane than he really was).

Had Eddie died in, say, 2003, the casuals wouldn't care as much. To them he'd basically be another Test. But it's precisely because he finally got massively over that he is fondly remembered.

Take Owen for example. In the immediate aftermath of his death, he got canonized a bit higher than the level he actually reached amongst casuals, but over time that has generally faded, and while people still care about him more than they would if he was still alive, that's in large part due to the nature of his death. I don't see him cracking a lot of casual "Top Twenty Ever" lists, and I don't see that happening much with Eddie anymore either.

Basically I think you're overstating the general casual feeling about his legacy. In 2006 you have a case, but as time has gone on, the immediacy of the reaction fades, and we have the current sentiment of "Wow, what an entertaining guy who was taken too soon."

I'm not so sure, although I think the fact that he was Mexican in a company where there are a lot of Mexican fans but few Mexican wrestlers has a large part to do with it too, also the fact that for the next 10 years following his death, pretty much the ONLY Mexican wrestlers around were both hugely associated with him and referenced him constantly probably had a lot to do with it as well.

But him remaining in my sig has a lot more to do with him coming back from the brink of self-destruction to ascend to the top of the industry than it does with how great of a worker he was.
