That MegaBox does sound like a very cool idea. Of course, MegaUpload wasn't exactly clean and in the clear, but they rocked, I'll miss MU.

signing with the big labels doesn't make sense to begin with unless you really think you're going to be a superstar, if you don't sell millions of albums you're going to end up in debt to them, the system they have in place is predatory and needs to be torn down. if I ever start selling my music I'm doing it on something like bandcamp or itunes, the RIAA can eat a ****.

Odds are they won't do anything, people have a tendency to forget these things if the other side isn't mouthing back... Nah, our best hope is that Megaupload somehow gets acquitted, then things have a chance to start happen.

MU already made hundreds of millions off of copyrighted stuff without paying any artists, so it's easy for them to be like "okay, we'll pay them now, 90% even". MU was my fav, but the martyrdom is a liiiittle exaggerated here.

I agree it's uncool how it was shutdown, and it's kind of like a new age of policing where they shut it down and charge and then ask questions later, they don't have to prove anything to shut the site down etc etc. It's all messy from every angle, of course the system is corrupt all around.

MU never made money off copyrighted art. They made money off user traffic of which a lot was pirated, which they tried to prevent even IF they didn't do everything they could've done to prevent it. There is a difference and if you don't see that I don't know why people should take you seriously.

it has to get a lot worse before this becomes a mainstream viewpoint. it's going to happen eventually though because these people have no sense of where the line is, they're going to just take and take and take until everyone else can't tolerate it anymore. I'm putting the over/under on this at 40 years from now

Sure, there's more to it than the one sentence summary I gave it, but it is true that they made obscene amounts of money largely off of pirated stuff. And I'm proud of 'em for it, just pointing out the obvious. Not sure why you threw in that take me seriously jab, a bit silly.

There are some messages sent that seem to incriminate MU officials.

They have a rewards program for people that have files that are downloaded by a large number of people. They were giving rewards to people who were hosting pirated content, and these messages show that MU officials knew that the material was illegal but would "let it slide."

The rewards program works like this, for X amount of downloads, the uploader would get $30 to $40 depending on the site. Some sites pay more and some pay less.

And what does that have to do with the rewards program? Wouldn't that make it even easier to earn rewards because you are getting more downloads?

The rewards program by itself isn't a problem. It's the fact that it pays out to people who upload pirated content. Restricting file size can be seen as a step towards reducing payouts to pirated content.

I download stuff in chunks all the time, but it's usually stuff that is hard to find and there aren't any torrents or full direct downloads of it.

And since pretty much every one of these services has the file limits, usually you just see the same file mirrored on like 6 of them all broken into the same pieces.

skim reading that article all it seems to imply is that there was wrongdoing on MU's part, that doesn't mean that's why they were taken down. CBS/CNET was one of the biggest architects of the piracy culture that exists today and they will NEVER be prosecuted for that, lr2politics.

The article spells out how the takedown was legally justified. It admits that the people who pushed for it probably didn't like the idea of MegaBox, but at the same time the evidence used for the takedown wasn't fabricated.

MU has been doing illegal stuff for a long time, like a lot of sites on the internet. You can't just take down an entire site just because of some illegal activity, that was whole issue with SOPA/PIPA. Only now has it been taken down completely.

No not really. The issues with SOPA were takedowns without evidence and unsafe changes to DNS, among others.

And really, "some" illegal activity? Understatement of the year, right hurrr

SOPA/PIPA never really explained how the accusations and evidence would be handled. We don't know how much evidence would be needed. And they wouldn't result in a site being shut down like this, they just removed you from the DNS system, which makes it harder, but not impossible, for people to get to your site.
