So one of the GameStops here is closing because they decided they only want 1 GameStop in the area and the other one is next door to a WalMart so there's more traffic going in and out there. But thing is they're closing the one I went to before Final Fantasy XIII-2 comes out (they're closing on Sunday). Which I had pre-ordered XIII-2 but due to this closing they're having a 20% off sale on both new and used games (which, if you know GameStop, they RARELY do deals for new games).
On top of that I have the PowerUp Rewards Pro card and pre-ordering XIII-2 period gets me 20% off the guide and with the card they're doing an additional 20% off the guide. So that's 20% off the game and 40% off the guidebook. So getting both game and book for around $64. Such a win even though I'll miss this GameStop. Its been my main one ever since it opened in my Sophomore year of high school. Alas.

From: The Real Truth | #004 $64? For something from the FF13 universe? What kind of a deal is that?
That.
And I bought the MvC3 strategy guide because it had a TON of awesome information in it. Of course, it was made obsolete because they released a sequel that changed everything about nine months later, but it was awesome then.
Before that one though, I literally cannot even remember the last time I've bought a strategy guide.

Man I remember at the midnight launch to FFXIII there were so many people buying the guide. I feel bad for them. I mean, what was in those 200 pages? "Hold the control stick forward?"

I was considering the SR3 guide because it came with cool DLC. Other than that, strategy guides tend to be a cut above GFAQs guides due to graphics and stuff, although GFAQs is probably more accurate.

guides now a days are for collectors, nothing more. Especially in the days of DLC and patches ahoy, which could change gameplay on a whim. And of course in the days of the internet
PC game guides were in obsolete by like 1998 due to the internet. Id say console game guides were obsolete a few years later due to people having to write the walkthrus on websites, and console games didnt have patches or DLC then.
