It's definitely a prayer, and there shouldn't be an issue with removing it.

paper, what is 'ridiculous' about the girl?
let us take a look at the prayer "Our Heavenly Father, the prayer begins, grant us each day the desire to do our best, to grow mentally and morally as well as physically, to be kind and helpful. It goes on for a few more lines before concluding with Amen. " now, you can be like "IT IS A GOOD MESSAGE REGARDLESS" Well, okay then. Let us rewrite the prayer to make it for atheists. "You don't need god to do your best each day, to grow mentally and morally as well as physically, to be kind and helpful." do you think that if this message was hung, that everyone would be okay with it because it is a nice message? ****. no. it would be a gigantic scandal. people need to stop acting like public places not being overtly religious is just because atheists are whiny babies, THAT is what is ridiculous, because if public places were overtly atheist, then you would see some REAL whining. -- I'm "kind of a big deal". http://img.imgcake.com/cyclo/Cyclopngegpngre.png ... I don't agree with this broad's agenda to mess with her school's motto or anything like that, and she doesn't exactly cast atheism in a great light by being an attention whore about it, but she's a teenage girl what can you expect? But I am completely incensed with how the article is written.
She is 16, the daughter of a firefighter and a nurse, a self-proclaimed nerd who loves Harry Potter and Facebook. But Jessica Ahlquist is also an outspoken atheist She's normal in every way. She's just your regular high-school nerd. BUT DEEP DOWN, SHE HARBORS A HORRIBLE SECRET. SHE IS AN ATHEIST. Why do we have to write things this way? Again, I don't see how the school is endorsing a religion.
For one thing, the girl had to have the prayer... brought to her attention. A friend brought the prayer to Jessicas attention in 2010, when she was a high school freshman. She said nothing at first, but before long someone else a parent who remained anonymous filed a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union. Many alumni this week said they did not remember the prayer from their high school days but felt an attachment to it nonetheless. I'm saying it's okay for them to display something written by one of their students. Regardless of religious affiliation (or lacktherof)
If they were forced to recite it, then I'd say "Yes, the school is endorsing religion." If an atheist wrote their own version, and said that "Let reason guide us... something something something" and they didn't hang that up, then I'd say "Yes, the school is endorsing religion."
