In between adding multiplayer, the option to take away gameplay altogether, and shoehorning in Skylanders-style content, as well as trying to keep in all the decisions the player has made over the first two games, I can't see ME3 as anything other than a disappointment.

And I didn't think the first two games were that hot to begin with!

I was pretty disappointed with ME2. The 3rd game should at least be enjoyable I guess. My brother will buy it I'm sure. I'll just play his copy.

You would think that the features being optional wouldn't bother me, but all of these things combined make it seem like EA is forcing Bioware to drastic alter the design of the game. If I was a team member, I'd hate working under all those restrictions. The project is already ambitious enough as is, and all these extras just add more to consider.

Actually, gotta be honest - I've paid very, very little attention to ME3 hype. I try to avoid trailers at all costs these days, which seems to be a good thing (certainly made Arkham City feel more fresh than had I kept up with everything). But the stuff I do hear about just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.

Tycho from Penny Arcade once talked about extra features like these (from some other game, a while back). He said it's like ordering a pizza and getting a free walrus. Even if the walrus were fantastic, it's still not the reason you ordered the pizza.

Does EA suck? Sure, no doubt. I hate having to get Origin just to play the game and I do agree that EA has overstepped their boundaries when it comes to Bioware.

ME3 will still be great though. Everyone who made the first games made this one as well, and no series in recent memory has captured me the way ME has. Both of the first games were great for their own reasons, and I fully expect ME3 to be a grand combination of all the strong points from both.

Oddly, I used to not like EA. Now I do.

Mass Effect was the first WRPG I really got into. I thought it was a very good game. I thought Mass Effect 2 was also a very good game. And I'm willing to bet I'll like Mass Effect 3 unless they REALLY screw things up. Which I don't think they'll do.

I have to admit, that's all it'd take to make me happy, too. But there's this massive sinking feeling I'm getting that the game is going to become so bloated with extra features that the whole design loses focus. It's the reason Assassin's Creed: Revelations was such a disappointment for me - there was so much crammed in there like bomb crafting and a tower defense minigame and Desmond's first-person sequences that I felt the story (what I really came for) felt neglected as a result. It was more difficult to follow than previous games, and I didn't have the same push to continue on as I did in II and Brotherhood.

Summary: ME3 is probably going to be okay, but there's no way it'll be better than ME2. And me personally not liking Mass Effect that much shouldn't bother anyone else.

I just finished Revelations yesterday myself, and I felt the early part of the game dragged on. I definitely understand what you mean about not really feeling the drive to continue, because I had that feeling at that point, too, but once you got past the first few hours of the game where they introduced all this crap you never really have to use, the game was fun and the story was pretty solid. Old Ezio was great, too.

AC2 is still easily the best game in the series, but Revelations > Brotherhood.

Also, it's not really a "problem," per se, but it doesn't mean very much for someone who doesn't like the series as much to say the next game isn't going to be good.

I've heard that the writers from DA2 wrote the script for ME3. That isn't a good thing. I also heard that Rachni conclusion isn't actually going to be that big of a deal either way.

ME2 is one of my favorite games ever. I'm looking forward to ME3 but I have lowered my expectations greatly.

The ME1 to ME2 player decision import was pretty good. But I have a feeling they are going to pull a DA1 to DA2 and completely phone it in. Seriously they didn't even try with DA1 to DA2... Characters you killed/never met/turned away showed up and were all "yeah I helped the Warden save the world, what up".

Nah, the lead writer for ME3 is Mac Walters, who was also the lead for ME2. He also worked on the first game and Jade Empire.

I think two of the writers from DA2 were helping him, yeah, but he's still the main guy writing it.

Dragon Age II isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. I enjoyed it. Some of the writing was really bad though, particularly Anders. So whatever character ends up written really badly in ME3 will probably be written by that chick who wrote Anders.

And I have faith in them on the import from ME2 to ME3. That's Mass Effect's big thing, they can't really skimp out on it. Dragon Age did, yeah, but the whole import your character thing seems like more of a Mass Effect thing anyway.

They made the first game as part of planned trilogy and ooohhh look all the choices you can make that will impact the course of galactic history how exciting! But then they realized actually following through on that idea would be a lot of work and voice acting for potentially dead people is expensive and everyone will buy their games anyway so why not just phone it in with some third person cover shooter hallway full of crates game and toss the player a couple of emails about their decision and call it day.

Definitely going to abstain from buying future Bioware games if ME3 doesn't demonstrate at some level of narrative effort on their part.

I kind of understand where you're coming from. ME3 to me has the look of a game that's going to be a fanservice roller coaster and a bunch of "cool stuff" shoved into it, but somewhere along the line they're going to fail to deliver the finale the trilogy deserves. It won't be a bad game, but it's going to fail to live up to its potential and hype because it's being bogged down by crap that shouldn't matter.

Think of MGS4. Not the best game in the series by a long shot. Still had memorable moments and did some things right, but was mostly full of itself and the gameplay, while having some vast improvements made to the engine, still suffered for the most part. It tried really hard to be a grand finale and a MGS fan's wetdream, but forgot to actually excel as a game.

As a fan of the first two (absolutely adored the first, thought the second was good), I'm cautious about what I've seen of ME3. The way ME2 ended just made it impossible for the conclusion in 3 to be satisfying, especially after how well they set things up in ME1. Hopefully they don't just end up with Shepard going around solving the different species' personal disputes when there's this huge looming threat to the entire galaxy already ravaging Earth.

I'm not sure what fanservice ME has to offer. They made one game, and before they could even make a series out of it they did everything short of reboot the whole thing in the second game with that shamefully lazy time skip crap. What are they gonna go? Bring back characters, events and location from the first game -- things that all should have been in the second game to begin with?
