I wanna get in the best shape of my life. I'm 6'1 160lbs so I'm not overweight at all, but I'm also just pretty skinny and soft, no muscle mass. So it's time to fix that! I've just been starting off with pushups, crunches, and long jogs, but any general advice or ab specific advice would be appreciated.

you want to gain significant muscle mass, you gotta start lifting weights because calisthenics can only do so much (and you'll just be getting muscle endurance for the most part)

six pack abs only show up when you have a really low amount of body fat so no matter how many crunches you do, they won't pop out till you start losing the body fat which only really happens by eating smarter

TV is right you have to eat really well and do significant cardio along with lifting.

Basically you have to work out everything, but you sound like that's the direction you want.

Start strengthening your core by doing a lot of free-weights.

Afterward, you can start doing more specific types of crunches.

and you really have to set yourself a concrete goal so you don't end up wasting time AND money (because serious fitness will require you spend)

if it's just general fitness you want (your body isn't aching and you aren't losing breath after you do some strenuous activity and you barely get sick, if ever), you can continue doing what you're doing and just avoid junk food

but if you want to get bigger and stronger, you better hit the gym or invest in some free weights (dumbbells, barbells, etc.) and start getting more protein

if you want to do that AND have six pack abs, you better get ready to do a lot of hard work and strict dieting unless you have awesome genetics because the calorie intake for bulking up and feeding your muscles is a lot which, as a side effect, usually involves an accumulation of some body fat especially in the waist

You don't NEED the gym. I usually just do "calisthenics" stuff and eat well and I kind of almost have a six-pack... well if you want to get RIPPED then I guess you need the gym.

well, yeah, you can get a six pack without getting bigger and stronger so just body weight exercises and a good diet can get you results

but that's why i specifically said if he wanted to get bigger and stronger, then he has to use weights

calisthenics can make your body "cut" if you eat right and you'll definitely get a decent strength improvement but it has a pretty limited range compared to the gains you can make through weightlifting

Thanks for the info, all. I'd love to have a great midsection and be bulkier everywhere but that might be unreasonable. If I attempt to really bulk up, you guys have advice for the best way to get protein? I assume there's some obvious stuff like meat and eggs, but besides that?

Take a modern dance class, that'll strengthen your core (with the right teacher). There was one exercise, but it's hard to explain without showing it.

Sit-ups, crunches, squats, dancing and sex are great for building a strong core.

whey powder

not sure how much it costs exactly over there in the good ol' us of a but i'm sure it's cheap enough and the average brand has around 20 something grams of protein in one cup

Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard is the best one for price AND quality

and you can get a great midsection and be bulky, too, but most people bulk up first to get big, eating a lot even if it isn't all "clean" food, then they start cutting the fat later by adjusting their diet while not worrying about losing their muscle gains

easier that way instead of trying to bulk up while trying to lose body fat at the same time
