Is the pointless character deaths that are used for cheap dramatic effect and leave a sour taste in your mouth.

No reason to kill off any of these characters. It's like someone writing the script was like "oh hey. we could kill someone off, right? that's sad. that'll make this movie emotionally impactful."
Let's break this **** down.
Picard's family: Was there even a reason for this? To establish his sadness about not having a family so it can be fulfilled in the Nexus I guess. Not worth it. Way to ruin the Family episode. "Let him dream" that's how the episode ends. Let him burn in a fire, actually. That's a better character arc.
Kirk: This is probably the most offensive. Kirk, who has cheated death so many times it's even pointed out directly in the movies, dies in the most stupid way possible for no reason than to have him die. There's a dozen ways they could've solved the Soren situation without killing him, and Picard would be smart enough to think of them. Like "let's go back to where we first met Soren and slit his throat" for instance. I'm pretty sure RLM already addressed that last point but whatever, I stole it because it's true.
Data: I get the feeling this was only done to pull on the audience heart strings because there's no legit reason to do it that way. 80 year old Action Picard has to go fight on the alien ship and Data has to save him! but he only brought one transporter thing! so he has to die! sacrifices himself to save his Captain that' sad but he's so human tho!
All three of those just leave you feeling worse for having experienced them. The drama you get in exchange isn't worth it. I'm glad they didn't do a DS9 movie because they probably would've killed Kira off so she could die in Odo's arms or something. I'd definitely be up for a Voyager movie though, I have no emotional attachment to any of those characters.
