Partially Sony employee discounts.

I also kinda want to try Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Not made by Naugty Dog so I don't expect a lot, but it does have the same voice actors and motion capture acting, so I expect that part to be good.

I have no idea if I'm allowed to post the discount number. Actually, I don't know what the system is selling for to the public, either. I do know that I was like "Yeah, I'd pay that much for a portable."

Even with a discount, I'd rather wait for a remodel with improved battery life. And I don't think any discount would be enough to make those terrible memory card prices worthwhile, especially since I'd really like to be able to buy all my games digitally. Although I suppose with the retail releases not being on optical media anymore, digital downloads don't have the inherent advantage that they did on PSP.

Yeah, battery life on the 3DS and Vita both is pretty bad. Vita seems to come out ahead in comparisons between the two, though.

uh... no it doesn't come out ahead there. if this is referring to the same test i'm thinking of, one was running uncharted which turns everything else off, the other was playing monster hunter. goes without saying that if you disable any and all network/wireless communication your battery will suddenly jump up quite a bit.

I've been thinking about picking one up too, but the only thing holding me back is knowing that I'll NEVER play it. Not because of a lack of games, but I'm either working, driving, or at home with access to non-portable games. I think I played my original DS once maybe.

Nah, there have been multiple tests since Vita launched. One was the Vita playing UMVC3 on max settings (WiFi on, 3G enabled, Bluetooth enabled, brightness, volume) while the 3DS ran SSF4 on max (brightness, volume, WiFi on, 3D off). Vita topped out at 4:16, 3DS at 3:30. There were a couple of other notable ones, too. 3DS won one of those (both systems were at minimum settings playing F1), Vita won the other. Both are pretty rough, but Vita's isn't especially bad or anything.

huh. so basically the vita manages power better at higher settings while the 3ds manages power better at the lowest ones (even including 3d which apparently doesn't kill it that much).

If Uncharted is anything like console...ever notice how UC never seems to load between levels? Lots of streaming.

Played one at gamestop today for the first time.

Pretty nifty, bigger screen that I expected and the game (Golden Abyss) really did look like PS3. Couldn't get the back touch screen to work though.

Analog sticks feel kinda small but I guess the nub took some getting used to too.

I would've waited if not for the great launch lineup. Wipeout, Uncharted, and Lumines, with Gravity Daze/Rush around the corner makes it pretty solid. If anything, it's miles ahead of the 3DS launch.

I'll probably hold off until the remodel though it'll be tempting when the inevitable price slash before the end of the year happens.

This is the most reliable battery comparison you'll get. A guy playing the same game on both machines on camera until the batteries run out, with equivalent settings.
