It's like, smashing buttons when I first started out seemed to work better than now understanding how to pull off combos, properly counter, and know all of my characters moves now.

It's frustrating. My last two games I just spammed a couple of attacks and prayed and it worked better.

Also, f*** people that use Nightmare. Cheap son of a b****.

cause you gotta change your style to match what you're thinking to what you're doing properly until that flows like your standard 'push buttons WHOO'

Yea Nightmare users are the worst. The thing that makes it worse is that I know what they are going to do, but I still can't block it. : |

I mean, credit to them for making a pretty cool Jecht, but f*** Nightmare's stupid s***. He literally corned me and spammed the same attack over and over, and I couldn't block cause I was considered still getting juggled or something.

Well, until I get to a certain skill level in a fighter I can theoretically lose to someone who is mashing buttons. You have to be good enough to know how to approach someone who's flailing chaotically, or it's a tossup.

Maybe it's just me, but I see this kind of thing A LOT more in 3D fighters than 2D ones.

Also, something I hate in the game is that up on the joystick/d-pad sometimes makes you jump. It's especially annoying to pull off moves that require a double tap in the up-direction. Why couldn't they just map it to another button?

To break down my first three days withe game:

5-11 (31%) first night.
2-6 (25%) the next night.
5-13 (28%) tonight. I was 3-13 and ready to quit but I randomly decided to run off two more matches.

I'll openly admit I'm not good, but I would hope that knowing what I'm doing with show some improvements, I guess.

And yeah, 3D fighters are both harder to learn and easier to win by mashing.

Also, playing fighting games over the years I have noticed that even good players can every now and then lose to button mashers. It has to do with the psychology behind the game. A good player will try to get in your mind and predict what you'll do next, but if you're button mashing even YOU don't know what you'll do next. =p

One of my few wins tonight came against a guy who was 8-1 heading into our fight.

I followed it up with a loss to someone with a 30 percent winning percentage.

Your execution just isn't caught up with your knowledge yet. So you're actually playing less effectively for now. But once you start getting the hang of it, you should be much better than when you were mashing.

Either that, or you're trying to play mashers like you would a normal opponent. If they're mashing, and if SC5 isn't completely broken (I don't know, I haven't played yet), then they should be leaving themselves wide open to all sorts of things you normally wouldn't be able to do against someone who knows what they're doing.

Reminds me of the time when I played SC2 back in the arcades nonstop. I was feeling pretty good about my Kilik after playing against a few other decent players, learning how to play mind games to keep enemies at bay, then some girl who looked like she'd never even touched the game before came in and started playing against me. She chose Talim, bumrushed me to f*** and back spamming weak attacks, and I was so caught off guard that I lost pretty badly.

It was a sad day for me. Worst part is? She wasn't even hot. ;_;

And yet you still found yourself attracted to her due to her ability to dominate you like that, right?

Poor guy. That's a rough situation.

Oh, and don't confuse me as saying "THE FIGHTER GENRE SUCKS! IT'S ALL ABOUT PURE DUMB LUCK!" Cause that's not my point, just to be clear.

Fighting is largely the only genre where this occurs for me, though. Any other game, whether it be against the A.I. or against human opponents, I always seem to show a steady increase in ability. When I started out in Halo: Reach, for example, I had a K/D below .7. But then I steady improved and now it's up over 1. And that's against human competitors, so it's not like it's I'm just figuring out the A.I. or anything.

And I know it sounds like I'm jumping on this early, but it seems to be a reoccurring theme with me when it comes to fighting games. It always seems like my level of improvement doesn't correspond with my knowledge of the game.

At least this time, I know I'm going to stick around long enough to see how this plays out (wooo ezio).

It's a lot harder to beat spammers/mashers in SC than in, say, SF4 because you really have to know when you're at frame disadvantage and what you can and can't punish. In SF4, if someone whiffs a DP, you have all the time in a world to punish, but in SC, you actually have to know from experience that you can punish a character's 3B with Pyrrha's 236B or you lose a lot of damage (and a knockdown for more potential damage). It's probably why you're having trouble beating noobs online and it's why I can beat people online with just Pyrrha's 4K.

jeeze what ****ty games are you playing with terrible commands like this

Also the PS2-era Mortal Kombats didn't do this. The only jumps in those games were forward and backward jumps, straight up made you sidestep into the screen. Same with ducking, you had to press a diagonal because just down would make you sidestep out of the screen. Those games certainly had their fair share of other problems, though!

you're probably over thinking, I've known some people who were brilliant at analyzing games and breaking down the mechanics of what is going on but are terrible at playing, you have to instinctually use what you know rather than having to stop and think about it. analyze your game and take notes as a separate process from actually playing it, save replays and just do a film session every now and then and write down everything you did wrong, things to take advantage of, things to avoid etc

also don't do things that are flashy or "difficult", a common trap people fall into is trying to look good rather than be good, when you lock down a move you weren't proficient with before it doesn't mean you need to USE it a lot, it just gives you the option. understanding the purpose of each attack is as important as physically being able to execute it, only spamming a few attacks has the advantage that you are intimately familiar with the hitboxes and timing so that could be part of why incorporating new moves is hard for you

My current SC5 online strategy:

1. get a knockdown
2. do a low that knocks down
3. do a low that knocks down
4. repeat steps 2 and 3 until they start blocking
5. do a mid launcher into a combo
6. do a low that knocks down
7. grab

then i do exactly the same thing the next two rounds and i win
