Like, I saw a few videos here and there about an indie game called Atom Zombie Smasher, and preeeetty much instantly had a low opinion of it because it had zombie in the name and didn't really seem all that great on the surface (zombies invading town, have to evacuate people yawn).
Later on I watch a video with a bit more depth to it and realized that there was more going for the game than I initially thought and am heavily considering a purchase some time down the line.
Alternatively, ever jump on a game you know you will like but just never set aside the time to play it?

Not really avoided it, but I impulse bought Sims Castaway and vanilla Persona 3, both for PS2. I played Castaway for weeks and didn't touch P3 because it looked rather boring/generic. Now I love it.
Avoid is a bad term to use here. I rarely "avoid" games. Sometimes circumstances make it hard to get around to them, or even sometimes I'm just not interested in something. But there's very few games that I say I'd "avoid."

Persona 4 comes to mind. 'Dating sim' was a term that kept popping up around here for a good while, which instantly turned me off to it, so I avoided it for a couple of years. Also didn't help that Albion was a big supporter of it! One of my favorite RPGs ever now, though,
