I just got to Fort Frolic for the first time after deploying the Lazarus Vector. Neat atmosphere, definitely well done... I'm just pretty over the combat and don't feel particular connected to anything to want to find out what happened in Rapture.

What? No it didn't. A lot of similar FPS elements are in it because FPS has been based on HL2 for a while now, but that statement is a huge simplification.

I will also back up the advice to stop after the big spoiler. Pretend the game ends right there, because it goes straight downhill afterwards.

Fort Frolic is amazing, though. I hope you're only at the beginning of it, and not at the end, because it has some really cool stuff.

I agree that the combat is mediocre. Basically all I used was frozen wrench + bees/lightning throughout the entire game. Stickies + gas can for big daddies. Bioshock 2 improves the combat quite a bit, but if you don't like the first, you probably won't like that one either.

Hrm. Sounds like a twist is good, but I really want it to just happen now. Two areas could easily turn into an hour or two of gaming with all the exploring and random directions you can go (especially with how difficult it is to make sense of the map with all of the arrows and such).

SPOILERS.

The twist is much better playing through than it is watching it. The approach, Andrew Ryan telling you what a disappointment you are, then coming on the bulletin board and listening to the two recordings... realizing you've been played the entire time, what seemed like a charming quirk turning out to be a key plot point...

All I can say is, you missed out.

Bioshock is really overrated.

I think the reason it got so popular is because it introduced a crapton of casual FPS gamers to the concept of "atmosphere". For someone who's only played Call of Duty and Counter Strike, it must have seemed like the best thing ever.

But when it comes down to it, it's just a boring story with generic gameplay.

Bioshock came out before CoD exploded, though. The casual FPS gamers of the day were probably hooked on Halo, but whatever.

I love the game in large part because it was my introduction to HD gaming. The visuals were simply stunning, and the game's combined it with that feel-good 1950s music to deliver a really haunting atmosphere. It still has one of the most beautiful and unique game worlds I've ever seen. The combat could get a little played out because there wasn't much enemy variety, but there were so many different ways to deal with them that the player could always experiment to keep things interesting. The weapon variety was solid, and paired with the plasmids, you had tons of ways to heap death upon your foes. Come on, tell me that using Telekinesis to kill one baddy with the body of another isn't an awesome feeling.

It does stumble across the finish line as others have said, but overall I still consider it an outstanding game and a cut above Half-Life 2.

HD gaming

Yeah, this is another big point. The visuals were a step up from what most people were used to, which helped drive the hype. But since when did graphics make the game?

Bioshock is a game with a good atmosphere, good writing, and extremely lackluster gameplay. And while the TWIST is one of the best ever, it offers very little in terms of characters to get invested in. Good game, but it gets pretty overrated in general.

It's not just the polygon count, but what the game managed to do with it. Rapture is a simply stunning world. HL2 probably does have Bioshock's number purely in terms of gameplay, but Bioshock's atmosphere is superior enough to bridge that gap.

And while the TWIST is one of the best ever

I legitimately don't get why people say this, and I'd love it if one of the Bioshock fans in this topic can explain.

SPOILERS

Take away the mind control aspect, and the twist is a pretty generic betrayal involving three characters who you really have no vested interest in. All the mind control bit does is add unnecessary complication (Why did Fontaine bother disguising his voice or staging his 'family's' death, besides for the benefit of the player?) that creates a weird feeling of separation between you and the main character, who is supposed to be your avatar. The jab at gaming and player agency would be kind of cool if they had done something like turned the game open-world and let you decide how to proceed from that point, but the rest of the game is just as linear and restrictive as everything before the twist, like they had no idea how to finish the story.

Not to say that the moment wasn't reasonably well-done, but I really don't see why it gets so much praise.

I was very disappointed by Bioshock given the hype myself. The combat isn't great, the game thrives on repetitive fetch quests which really have no place in this sort of game, and even the atmosphere and story, the game's high points, weren't exactly perfect. Very lacking in execution, particularly the narrative and the way it goes from amazing to awful in act 3. Poor implementation of moral choices too (what was even the point?). And frankly, for all the talk of the game's graphics... This game had really bad graphics, even for its time. The environments look ugly, the character models look hideous and-this is the part where it gets unforgivable-there's only 9 of them. In a game with dozens of NPCs. And only two unique ones. You have major, major characters who are palette swaps of generic enemies! Way to break immersion.

It's just not that good overall. The sequel fixes some of it but manages to lose almost everything good about the first game and just creates further problems. But don't get me wrong. I really wanted to like Bioshock, it had a great setting and an ambitious concept. But the actual game was lacking in the delivery.

I am super-hyped for Infinite though.

That is definitely a big reason the game goes downhill after that.

Though one big reason the game was made was just to be a proof of concept for a modern System Shock 2. First they had to prove that you could do a game like System Shock 2 with today's audience, and now that they have proven that, they are pulling out all the stops for Infinite.

Can't quote the specific part because SPOILERS but you totally missed the point. It's not actually about the character, it's about you, the player.

The entire plot twist was a commentary on the linearity of gaming and the illusion of free will in games. <_<

Crap what the hell, there goes my post.

Anyways I was GOING to add that a case could be made that the continual linearity of the game could be seen as intentional deprecation of the player by the developers, but I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. At the very least, the only choice they gave you that affects the plot was...well, really, really bad, and the endings were pretty awful to be honest.

But mainly I don't think it was ever about the characters at all.
