yeah, that is a really tough starting position...makes it easy to be surrounded, uses up all the space to expand so everyone hates you, etc

Can you have duels with anyone other than your main guy? Granted, I'm guessing my guy is waaaaay too strong to ever get a duel request accepted... but it may be worth it from the headstrong, brute force types! With 99 War, who knows, maybe I could stand up to the badasses like Guan Yu and Xiahou Dun and all that.

Yep! Forgot to mention it, but you actually recruited like 3-4 people through duels alone, one of them being Gan Ning who's got pretty high WAR and LDR stats. I only seemed to get lucky and have duels be accepted with my main character though, probably because his WAR's way more reasonable. You were my second most-used military officer!

Otherwise, least I'll negate damage all the time so I can spearhead or defend stuff.

Yeah, when I want a single strong unit stack, I always use my leader (for the massive army count) plus you (for the skill and a little boost to attack). Otherwise, I'll just have you hunt down the weaker enemies for lossless victories.

But yeah, if this is anything like Dynasty Tactics 2 or Empires modes of Warrior games... best thing you can really do is try and stay low key at first. Get officers first off, maybe even serve another lord if you can. Then once you've built up a bit, you steal some land and take out weak guys or strike up alliances and whatnot.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work as well as that. Anyone you're not actively sending tributes to will have deteriorated relations over time, and even if you get good relations with someone, they'll still attack you if you're the best target around. It's why Liu Yan started attacking me so early; all that was to the north of him was Dong Zhuo who was a powerhouse. Additionally, once the Sun family took over the 4 territories to the south of me, I had a huge border with them and it'd be near impossible for them to expand WITHOUT attacking me. Dong Zhuo hated me from the times he tried to ninja in units from the mountainsides, and I never expected him to get that huge without any backup supporting me (Cao Cao held out, but he couldn't really attack). I couldn't attack Liu Biao because that would just give me a border with Dong Zhuo, plus I had my hands full with the Sun. I was attacked from all sides by some powerful factions with almost no room to expand, even though I kept getting great officers and kept killing key enemies (I think I killed at least two faction leaders).

IMO the best place to start is probably next to Tao Qian, I can't really tell from the starting map you posted but it looks like it has room to expand eastward, and everyone around it is pretty weak. Tao Qian is also terrible except for when he has Liu Bei and friends.

Started a little to the southeast of Tao Qian this time since there was a ton of easily defendable neutral cities in the area and expanded to four cities before any real wars began. Took over Tao Qian's lands while fending off attacks from the west and stalled for long enough to where my ally Cao Cao was strong enough to hold off Dong Zhuo and basically everyone else to my west. It was about that time that Liu Bei suddenly became a total pain in the ass; he got one of my prefects to have Shou Chun (the one territory that bridges my 4 territories to the south and the northern front) defect along with a couple of really good officers. I had been stockpiling weaponry and soldiers in that city, and he ended up with all of it! Also, pretty soon, he took over all the territory to my north, so he had me surrounded with some good officers with a force just as strong as mine. At one point, he even sent Guan Yu and Zhang Fei with some massive armies to Xia Pi, a city that rebounded back and forth between my hands and his back and forth for literally about five years.

Fortunately, I had my leader (80ish WAR), Hugo (98ish), and Jeffrey (72ish) as Sworn Brothers for times like this. Sworn Brothers in the same unit almost always support each other. I challenged Zhang Fei to a duel with my leader and it became a gloriously close 3 on 1. He kept critting in Spirit form, so he spammed skills to hell and back. But I ended up winning, and executed him immediately. Somehow got lucky enough to repeat this process with Guan Yu, and that's when I started pushing Liu Bei back. I eventually captured Liu Bei himself and got him executed, which was pretty awesome. Picked up Zhou Tai along the way and just got Zhao Yun a minute ago, so I have about 7 completely amazing commanders. The war's still mostly a standstill, though.

Can't take pictures at the moment, but right now the country's evenly divided between Dong Zhuo's successor in the northwest, Liu Yan's successor in the southwest, Sun Jian in the south, myself in the east, Liu Bei's successor to the north, Gongsun Zan to the far north, and Cao Cao in the center. Everyone's fighting multiple fronts at the same time; I'm fighting Sun Jian, Liu Bei's successor, and Gongsun Zan, Cao Cao's fighting Dong Zhuo, Sun Jian, and just conquered Liu Biao, etc. This is pretty f***ing intense and awesome.

I think my next immediate threat is Gongsun Zan; he's mainly fighting Liu Bei's forces and winning and seems to be on decent terms with Cao Cao, so I'm his next logical target. I'm bleeding Liu Bei's forces of good commanders so it shouldn't be too long before I can overpower him.

I set How Pan, Green Cole, and Bolo Tam to be Sworn Brothers and left them the safe district back south so I haven't seen much of them, but I'd have been screwed without them to push back Sun Jian!

Also, I accidentally set Zhou Lihai to be one year too young to be a commander, and she's ended up in Sun Jian's forces. Wonder what the chances of that happening were >___>

Wang Kuang. Never heard of the guy. And Dong Zhuo was succeeded by someone named Liu Fu.

The stalemate continues, though it looks like Sun Jian might take my southwestern most city. Gongsun Zan offered a ceasefire, at least, so now I'm only warring Sun Jian and Wang Kuang, the latter of whom is getting mauled by Gongsun Zan so he's not fighting back too much. I'm thinking of breaking my alliance with Cao Cao; he's now the biggest power out there and doesn't seem to be having problems with Liu Fu.

Really wondering when Liu Yan's successor, Liu Xun, is gonna make a move. He still has basically all the territories he started with; I don't even know who he's been fighting so far >_>

Think if I somehow manage to get off some disrupt relations actions off on, say, Sun Jian against Liu Xun, it'd be worth it? >_> hardly ever manage to get them to work though, argh.

That sounds like a job for a skilled officer with connections to the Wu forces...too bad you let her join Sun Jian, lol. ;p

You're currently on the front lines, and I got a load of good POL/CHR officers when I defeated Wang Kuang, so I might actually be able to make rumor missions happen now and get you in my forces!

Current situation; allied with Gongsun Zan, we each took out one of Wang Kuang's cities to finish off his forces, and proceeded to ignore my northern and western fronts since I'm surrounded by allies everywhere except towards Sun Jian. I managed to get Cao Cao pissed off at Sun Jian as well, so he's fighting on three fronts now; Liu Fu, Sun Jian, and Gongsun Zan. Maybe that'll slow down his stupidly fast expansion, because Liu Fu's nation is almost dead. If he's still doing well in a few years, I'll have to try to ceasefire with Sun Jian and focus on taking Cao Cao down.

Also, I find it hilarious that it took me about five years to recruit Xiao Qiao. She was a free agent the entire time because apparently nobody else could recruit her, but I finally got her by using Diao Chan.

Also Romance of the Three Kingdoms X allows you to play as individual officers, if that sounds up your alley. X is my favorite game in the series.

Hell yeah, I played X to death. I got about 30~ people on PotD to make characters and I was able to make two full nations separate from my own to play around with. Had to delete it because it took up way too much space on my PS2 memory card though ;_;

The removal of city population kicks all kinds of ass, though, and I'm not sure I could go back. That was a dumb thing to manage in X.

This was a while back but it was probably the most awesome part of my playthrough so far ^>_>^ I felt like a badass when I beat Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, though they were in separate fights!

X is my favorite. I like playing as an officer more than as a kingdom. I wish they would make another game like X, but at this point just getting another game....and in english, would be a miracle.

If you like Rot3K X, but didn't play Rot3K VII then I recommend that one. Seven and ten are very similar and both have the ability to play as a free officer.

Awww yeah, my WAR's greater than even Guan Yu's!

I really ought to download one of these games. Dynasty Tactics 2 is alright and all, but I'm a sucker for when they allow full scale war and one on one duels, and they're both separate systems.

Hopefully interest in these types of games will be higher once the Pokemon/Nobunaga's Ambition game comes out! The game's practically sure to succeed thanks to Pokemon anyways.

I've heard a lot of good things about 7 too regarding the officer freedom, gonna have to check it out sometime.

Your WAR's at 100 right now because I gave you Zhang Fei's spear, so you're pretty much an indomitable badass on the level of Lu Bu right now.

You should start with X, imo. It really helps ease you into the system by letting you play as a vassal, so you can basically see how a country runs bit by bit. XI's great once you know what you're doing, but the Rot3K games demand you know a lot about each facet of the game to do well. Duel system is different in each of them, too, which is a plus.
