Laguz don't promote. In PoR, they have a level cap of 20 but in RD, that's bumped up to 40. Their stat bonus from transformation sort of compensates for this. As for mastery skills, I believe in this one, they have to be at least level 10 (I could be wrong) whereas in RD, they have to be at least level 30.

You're doing pretty good...

Oh, right, this is the level where you can re-recruit Shinon. It's the second-most unintuitive recruitment in the game (Stefan's was the most unintuitive, because lol stand on a specific tile with one of two specific characters), so I'll tell you how it's done.

You have to talk to him with Rolf (I think he'll even initiate the conversation if Rolf gets into his range and he won't attack Rolf), but he'll still be an enemy after this conversation. You then have to defeat him and make sure Ike lands the "killing" blow. Even though he seems to be killed like any other enemy, Ike made sure not to strike a lethal blow. After the chapter is over, Shinon will rejoin your party. Of course, you haven't used Rolf at all, so good luck with that.

Also, I think it might be at the end of this chapter that Volke automatically promotes. Or maybe it's the next one. Whatever; I see you've got him pretty close to level 20 anyway, so you should be fine.

Chapter 18: Crimea Marches (Battle)

More pre-battle stuff! I leveled up Volke to 20 since apparently he promotes soon. And that's it for more pre-battle stuff!

So we're about to take on Daein and the birds fly up. "We want to help out! Isn't that right, Leanne?" "*random gibberish*" lolz I hope that happens constantly. Also, I let them join now I guess. I get Reyson, Janaff, and Ulki. And guess what? I DON'T LIKE ANY OF THEM! So I'm not using them. I might use Reyson another time since he's basically a dancer. But we do get Tanith, who seems cool. But she's overleveled, so on the bench she goes! And it's mostly all lance types, so I'm going to choose this carefully.

So I go with Ike, naturally, Rhys, Volke and Rolf (sadly). Then I need my axe guys Boyd and Kieran. Then Soren and Ilyana for my ranged damage, along with Astrid. Then Oscar for speed, Gatrie, for BEASTING. And... my last two end up being Marcia and Jill for some reason I'm not even sure about. So wish me luck!

I guess the crows are against us... and so is Shinon. :( Why you gotta be like that Shinon? Astrid evolves soon after to... a Paladin. Wtf is with this crappy system where every unique mounted unit evolves into the same thing and you just get to choose another weapon to use? I decide to make her use a sword as well. I have Kieran take care of the enemies that spawn in the south (with help from Oscar!) and then I inch my way carefully towards Shinon. I have Gatrie lure him over and they have a pretty cool conversation. Shinon basically tells him to just fight and worry about himself. And Shinon can't do any damage too him! Awww yeah. But then this dude uses Blizzard and f***s up Rolf. I have Rhys heal him immediately before having him talk to Shinon. Apparently Shinon taught Rolf how to use a bow.

"Shinon? Are you with the enemy?"
"Yep."

XD Such a blunt reply. Rolf starts to cry and Shinon gives about zero f***s. And then it's Ike vs Shinon! And Ike does not f*** around, because immediately after their conversation, he crit kills him. Yikes. Ike really did not like that Shinon ditched him. Shinon is hurt and Ike wants to heal him. Then Ike crits on the lance enemy that tries to fight him next. JESUS. Eventually... Rhys evolves too!

And then Gatrie is killed by the boss.

...So, I'm going to go ahead and pick this back up tomorrow and stay calm tonight.

Vantage + Wrath (which comes on Nephenee) is a REALLY good combo so long as you're careful with it (can easily lead to accidental 'too much owning' deaths).

9 strength after promotion, being stuck with bows and no Enemy Phase and his asinine recruitment conditions do not make a good unit.

Dem growth rates:

HP: 75%
Str: 65%
Mag: 20% (Which is irrelevant since he doesn't use any magic-based weaponry)
Skl: 70%
Spd: 65%
Luck: 35%
Def: 50%
Res: 40%

Given his base stats, he's not going to cap everything, but he still becomes a well rounded unit.

IMO Shinon's problem is his availability. Before he leaves he's still level 1 or slightly more unit, with crappy base stats that will lead him to lag behind at first when re-recruited.

If RNG doesn't screw him over, he becomes quite good later, but considering the amount of potential bow users you can have and that Rolf is generally more solid and always available, I don't think Shinon is that special.

Now, RD Shinon is an entirely different beast.

Rolf is the only other Sniper specifically, but if you need a bow user you also have Astrid, Geoffrey and the other Paladins if you choose to give them bows, and they're all fantastic units and much more versatile than Snipers.

So when we get Shinon he has 32 HP, 9 Str, 13 Spd, 9 Def. Whereas, say, Devdan starts out with 36 HP, 14 Str, 13 Spd, 11 Def. In fairness, we might have gotten Shinon a few levels early on, but if we're actually trying to use these units then Devdan has certainly gained a few himself, so let's call that a wash. End result: Devdan is beating Shinon handily, statwise. Devdan.

Now sure, Shinon's growth rates are excellent and he starts out three levels lower. Given time, he'll pull ahead in Speed (even if Devdan gets some help), while catching up in Defense and substantially narrowing the Hp/Str gaps. But the difference between the two scrubs when you start training them is surely larger than the gap when you're done. And if you consider being locked to bows a disadvantage (I certainly do!) then, well...

The whole 'bows are a disadvantage!' thing is totally overblown.

99% of the time you're not going to have your whole team exposed to enemies anyway, so the enemy phase doesn't actually matter much. You're almost always fighting in 3-4 square choke points in pretty much every FE game but 4.

Path of Radiance has some of the most open maps in the series (particularly chapter 26) so I'd say bow lock is more of a disadvantage there. I'd say it's always a disadvantage, in fact, just how large of one varies.

FE9 Rolf and Shinon both have huge problems in addition to their bow lock, though. Definitely two of the worst units in the game.

Granted, but even so, you STILL want to be forming barriers that enemies can't get around of 3-4 people on at most two semi-near to each other fronts. That still leaves 3-4 units that you don't want getting hit anyway.

Really, the only reason you'd never do that is if you're speed running, so it's a complete non-issue. The disadvantage you're talking about is only theoretical, not practical. How many times have you, personally, ever had EVERYONE in your group in range to get attacked on a single turn?

That is the only time it should ever matter, and those times are too few to matter in most playthroughs.

And frankly, sometimes not being able to attack back is a good help, like if you screw up and someone does get past your line (happens a lot with fliers), and you have both a sniper and say... a bishop open. The bishop would take a lot more damage from a hit usually (and have a higher chance to get hit), but they'll more often than not go for your sniper because they can't hit back at close range (this does depend on the game though- AI varies a bit in each. This is true for PoR though).
