Gene Wilder had the perfect mix of mysteriousness, eccentricity, mischievousness and charisma in his performance.

YOU LOSE, GOOD DAY SIR

was easily the best.

Throughout the entire movie you could tell he hated these kids, but he was still just this eccentric crazy guy. And then THAT SCENE, and you go "ok, woah, he's been holding this back for the past two hours".

If it's not the boat scene, then it's wrong.

Fun fact - the remake got much better reviews than the original.

IMO (and in the opinion of any sane person), the original was a damn masterpiece and the remake was garbage.

the problem with the remake is a problem i have with a lot of other Tim Burton movies (such as his Alice in Wonderland film).

He replaces any sort of cleverness or subtlety with out-and-out creepy weirdness.

I liked the remake for one reason:

No random, stupid five minute depressing song playing while Charlie walks home from his mother's laundry job.

Seriously, that is the worst scene in the entire movie.

I had no idea this film was enjoyed among people from our generation

I always assumed that it was something old people shoved down our throats because they liked it

Or maybe this is just "Board 8" at work I dunno

however almost every song that IS in the remake is devoid of any memorable qualities, and is a complete waste of time

The songs in the remake are LITERALLY taken word for word from the book. They're awesome.

I'm pretty sure it is possible to like both movies.

I just see them as completely different interpretations of the same plot, with different moral outlooks.

Also, best scene in Wilder's version is totally... actually, I was going to argue against the one you linked, but there really isn't another one that perfectly sums up the entire film like Pure Imagination does.
