I think you can easily argue it was worth owning an SNES and Genesis, and an N64 and PSX. And if you were into certain types of games, you could make good arguments for owning a PS2, Xbox, and GC.
With how few exclusives there were between 360 and PS3, was it worth it to own both this time around?
At the very least, PS3 brought us Uncharted and inFamous games, and the 360 brought us a few more PGRs and Halos. That sounds like it's worth owning both
I'd say it's worth it. My PC isn't up to snuff, so I dig some Xbox/PC exclusives such as Mass Effect 1, MGS4 is best plus I dig blu-rays so PS3 is worth it, sure.

I believe he was saying that he defined mainstream as "consoles by those manufacturers" so people wouldn't come up with stuff like N-Gage or Atari Jaguar.

Depends if you're into PC gaming, I suppose. There are quite a few 360 games that I've loved, and would have missed out on if I decided to get a PS3 instead, but most of them were also available on PC. The PS3 has enough tempting exclusives that I'll probably buy one eventually.
Buying both systems at/near launch wouldn't have been worth it at all, though.
Eh. I owned both consoles. I probably got more enjoyment out of those three consoles and the games I bought than people who paid the same money on one console and a bunch more games.

Why wouldn't you, though?

There's always hope for better things in life. But you can't let anything, friend, lover, God himself, be your hope. You have to be your own hope.
Fortunately I did get to play ToV during my 360 ownership. Mass Effect I'll play when I get a good PC. I miss the XBLA, though. Ms. Splosion Man was an absolutely joyful experience.
