I need some ideas of what to sing at the cattle call auditions. The first auditions are a cappella only, so I need something that sounds good without any accompaniment. I have a pretty flexible voice that can sing a lot of styles--jazz, musical theater, pop, maybe some rock--though I don't have the strongest "belt" voice. I have a classical background--lots of choir, was a music major for awhile, compose art songs and choral works, etc., and I sing in and manage an a cappella group.
Here's something of me singing "Mad World" by Gary Jules.
My fiancee and I multi-tracked it. It's a 7-part vocal arrangement that I wrote for my a cappella group, so the four guy voices are me, and the three girl voices are her. We're both auditioning, actually.
So, yeah, give me ideas. I considered "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka, but it might be too "boring" for an audition like this.

Behind Blue Eyes is a great suggestion. Right in my range, too. Don't Wanna Miss a Thing probably is a little too wild, I'd have to go into falsetto on some of those high notes. Which is fine, my falsetto is damned good, but it might not make much sense in the context of the song. I like both of those songs.

I have a tenor timbre, but I sang baritone and bass mostly in choir. If I had more private lessons, I'd be trained as a tenor. In my a cappella group, I sing Tenor 2. I don't have high Tenor notes, I wouldn't be a classical tenor per se (more like a lyric baritone, the highest baritone), but my speaking voice and natural resonance is that of a tenor.
I'd probably want to go with Adam, he seems like he has the most to offer to a singer.

Listening to your Mad World though I think something like Slide by Goo Goo Dolls would fit you pretty well if you draw it out a bit.
And if you want to go a bit deeper Iris is a big time song to go with
In that vein of songs Save Tonight from Eagle Eye Cherry is another key song
Something that I think can match your voice pretty well but may need to be spruced up beyond the chorus for a live audition would be Blue October's Hate Me
And for my somewhat oddball choice I honestly think your voice would lend itself very well to go at Firework from Katy Perry. I think you could really make the chorus special if you can make your voice bigger than the Mad World recording. A slow pacing of this song could be really cool.
Hope these help

Awesome suggestions, ScareChan, thanks. Man, I have so much to listen to! Haha. The auditions aren't until March 31st, so I have plenty of time to pick and practice.

Hahaha! I actually think I would pick Christina last, either her or Ceelo. Or however you spell it. Adam first, then probably the country guy, then Ceelo or Christina.

Any other ideas? Just sorta keeping this alive until I have time to record some of these and put them up, which admittedly might not be for a few days.

That song definitely doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd sound good on or enjoy singing. Jazz, musical theater-style, some pop (especially 90s pop, I can sing the **** out of boyband music), some melodic rock.

' Songs like this should be avoided for auditions. You need a song that people can recognize if it's not an original and you need for people to get into it. Song selection is a big thing. Unless this is widespread and I am just unfamiliar I think this would be better after you would have a foot in the door, not trying to get in.

The Longest Time is kickass, I've sung it before in all sorts of settings. But I think for this setting, it's a little empty without the accompaniment.

So I spent no time making these at all. I brought up the lyrics on my screen, picked a key I thought was decent, and sang into my mic on garageband without any accompaniment or anything. Just took the first take, and didn't affect the recording at all besides adding about 9% reverb (just so the outside noise didn't get in as much). They're pretty mediocre, but I think Pure Imagination is definitely the best.
These should at least give you an idea of how my voice would generally sound on these. I'm not used to doing belty songs at all, so Behind Blue Eyes and I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing are pretty rough (but Don't Wanna Miss a Thing has some pretty cool moments, I think).
