I don't think I "get" it. I got to "Chapter 2" or whatever, where you start to "play" as the girl. It's made me chuckle a few times, but I don't understand why so many people are obsessing over it. Does it get better farther in or something?

It picks up.

Just keep going. You'll know when you've gone far enough because by that point you will be unable to stop.

I don't know. I read up to act 3 or so and yeah, it made me chuckle a few times but I never quite got into it. So I just stopped reading it.

Let me put it this way.

There is a reason this thing is as beloved and popular as it is.

And it's not from watching kids dick around in their rooms.

Act 4 is where things get really awesome.

I'm really torn by a statement like this.

On one hand, asking someone to read that much and keep going if they aren't that into it is asking a lot.

On the other hand, it just gets so exponentially better...

I will say this:

To this day, I have gotten exactly 6 people to read Homestuck. Every single one of them said they weren't into it for hundreds of pages, even some of them past Act 2. My friend's girlfriend even flat out hated it. Now, every single one of them loves it, and even owns Homestuck clothing, framed posters, and hell, even necklaces and stuff. The girl who said she hated it is now an extremely devoted Homestuck fanartist.

I do not argue with results.

I was the same way, there were a couple of amusing moments but really it just didn't seem like my thing. But I was bored and kept reading and it just kept getting better until it was one of my favorite things.

I still don't like Problem Sleuth though so I am not the "typical" Homestuck fan.

My experience with Homestuck seems to be opposite most people's.

I thought it was really weird and kind of boring at first (probably first 100 pages) , but once they started Sburb I thought it was pretty funny. I enjoyed it more and more for a while, but then everything just felt like it was getting really convoluted and the story seemed unnecessarily complicated. If a story needs to have an author blogging and answering questions so people can understand what's going on, I don't think that's very good story telling.

I know I'm in the minority here. Homestuck is an incredibly impressive work of art, but I find it difficult to enjoy it.

I disagree. It's just a story telling you don't particularly like. You don't NEED the author to tell you things in Homestuck, it's just most people don't understand it because, frankly, they're not all that bright. And that's okay. Not everyone needs to be.

But, well, lemme just ironically (lol) copy paste one of Andrew's responses to a question from awhile ago.

The thing is, Homestuck is both a story and a puzzle, by design and by definition. If asked to define it, “a story that’s also a puzzle” is as close to true as any answer I’d give.

Should all entertainment be like that? No way. But something should be like that, because something like that should exist. That’s why puzzles exist, because puzzles are cool sometimes, and are challenging. We don’t go up to a jigsaw puzzle and go, “why the f*** is this in so many different PIECES, what kind of IDIOT would break this nice picture into TINY LITTLE BITS?!!” Nor do we want all of our nice pictures broken into bits like that. Some we just want to hang on walls and look at.

But unlike a jigsaw puzzle, there’s much to enjoy without having to solve it. Fun characters and silly moments. But if you turn your brain on, you can engage with the complexity and depth. If you turn it ALL the way on, you can get everything, and solve the puzzle. There is a range of ways to interface with it, from the casual to the maniacal. Failing to grasp everything shouldn’t preclude basic enjoyment, nor is it a symptom of failure by either the reader or the story.

Cramming every major plot point into a one minute flash just for the sake of making it a "puzzle"... eh. Why not just have the entire universe explode in one page and have the "puzzle" be to find out why it happened?

Admittedly, there have been one or two flashes I've had to rewatch to get exactly what was going on (I think Descend and Cascade are the two, but it's just one or two bits I didn't fully get), but they've all made sense.

Also for the record I wasn't trying to imply you're dumb in that, and I realized I might have come off like that. I just meant the majority of people. You can be smart and still not find something entertaining <.<

Hey, that was an 11 minute flash.

And just making it one page explosion removes that whole "Failing to grasp everything shouldn’t preclude basic enjoyment" part.

There's more reading than picture looking, actually.

There's also a few interactive flashes (and a good bit of non-interactive ones)

pretty much! just treat it like a regular webcomic at first, and keep in mind in the beginning it was all user submitted votes. Down the line there's more interactive stuff, where you actually control the character, and fight enemies and such.

Homestuck was entirely scripted, I think. His first stories were almost entirely user-submission which ended up getting ridiculously out of hand. He tried the partial-submission with Problem Sleuth but ended up going purely scripted for Homestuck.

At least I remember reading something like that a while back. Might be wrong?

Yeah the first several Acts have a lot of user submitted things (especially early Act 1, which apparently was a big contributor to a lot of people not liking early Act 1, because people tried to treat it too much like Problem Sleuth), but as the fanbase grew people just started submitting like every possible thing so he just stopped.

Also there was less and less stuff he could do with user subscriptions anyway as the plot got more involved.

I thought that was mostly just for details like people's names, not actual plot choices.

Although I recall the early exile stuff was done by user suggestions.
