Today's poll just served to reinforce the fact that I should really be reading much more.

Current:
Salman Rushdie - Midnight's Children

Fiction:
Ralph Ellison - Invisible Man
David Foster Wallace - Infinite Jest
Joseph Heller - Catch-22
Vladimir Nabokov - Pale Fire

Nonfiction:
Stephen Covey - The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Mario Livio - Is God a Mathematician?
Randy Pausch - The Last Lecture

That should tide me over for at least the next few months, but recommendations would be highly appreciated.

If you like fantasy, read the Dresden Files.

I'm not huge into fantasy but I did enjoy the HP/LotR series. That's about my whole exposure.

pro-tip if someone is reading or planning to read rushdie, nabakov, and invisible man, it's probably best to not recommend average serialized fantasy.

"hey I see you're reading gabriel garcia marquez. you should read robert jordan"

here is something you might be interested in, however: http://weirdfictionreview.com/

there's a number of great works or short, weird fiction from various countries over the last 100 years. the website acts as a companion piece to the Vandermeer edited The Weird, out later this year. also you should read borges if you haven't.

That website does look cool, although I prefer reading a printed work to a screen.

What of Borges would you recommend? Ficciones and Labyrinths seem to have much in common, but I'm not sure which one is considered definitive.

Ficciones has the stronger stories, but I'd just get this:
http://www.amazon.com/Collected-Fictions-Jorge-Luis-Borges/dp/0140286802/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329862536&sr=8-1

Also, if you have a Kindle or iOS device, you can use instapaper to send those short stories/articles to your device. Whenever I see a new story published, I just load it onto my Kindle.

Now this is a topic I can get behind.

How's Midnight's Children? I just read The Satanic Verses and I'll probably pick it up tomorrow in the library.

Also, that website looks pretty neat, I'll try to borrow at least one book it recommends me.

Midnight's Children is fascinating. The characters especially are extremely well-written. I'm not terribly far in though.
