Does anyone else find newer anime's animation style to be really....bad? I am not sure what it is about it but I just can't seem to enjoy watching any of them.
The only two animes that I have actually watched all the way through are Eva and Cowboy Bebop. I give Eva a 7/10 while Cowboy Bebop is simply one of my favorite shows ever and is as close to a 10/10 as I could give. I really like anime as some of my favorite movies (Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.) but I am having trouble finding anime shows that I can get into. Any good recommendations would be very much appreciated.

animation in elfen lied was one of its high points. it's a pretty violent and risque show though, so if you expected something else, well....
if you still like that kind of thing but don't want naked ladies killing everyone in the process or most of the drama that comes with it, Hellsing Ultimate is what you're after. if you're a lover of violence, you will absolutely find it becoming one of your favorites.
otherwise, Baccano, Gurren Lagann, hell Haruhi if you're still in an experimenting mood. Haruhi's nothing like you've seen yet. but if you're trying to stick with the more standard action-y shows, then yeah, Baccano!, Gurren Lagann, Durarara!! are some shows you should check out. in that order. <_<; do mind the first one needs you to get past the first episode a bit, but a few eps in and you will be hooked as you start to understand what's going on. if you want more story to be in there with your action-y stuff, i'd also consider The Twelve Kingdoms. very good show, that one.
if you JUST want actiony stuff, Sengoku Basara anime. but nothing tops Hellsing Ultimate in terms of just plain enjoyable violence and a badass.

Higurashi's a goodie if you want story and don't mind gore, yeah. just don't watch it before bed.
figure if he considers eva a 7 he probably cares about story somewhat in there. and bebop's main strength is characters, which will get Baccano! quite a heavy bump. though i'd also put down Haruhi since it's got some damn fine characters, though it's an entirely different genre. but hey if he's trying elfen lied might as well try the opposite extreme too if it's just experimentation.

Elfen Lied shouldn't your standard for "newer" anime animation, there's plenty of ones with much better animation (though if you really really like old-school animation that much...)
Only watched the first episode of Elfin Leid and the only interesting part was the beginning. Holding much judgement till I try to watch more but from the first episode none of the characters really made much of an impression.
I'd recommend Irresponsible Captain Tylor. It's pretty short(25 or 26 episodes I think) and it's my favorite anime ever. The animation isn't too good if you care that much about it, but the characters(especially the main character) are amazing. It's a pretty light hearted show to watch, so don't go in there expecting some huge drama though.
