But i could play on my PS3 on my account, he could play the same game on his ps3 on his account, and we would earn trophies individually, be able to play online with each other, etc?

However you can only download newly-purchased stuff on your account to three consoles maximum (you can deactivate downloads to get them back though). That only applies to stuff bought since a few months ago when they changed their policy, older stuff I think can be downloaded up to five or ten times
