From: iiicon | #137 were the console Fire Emblems any good? I never touched either. I did get the GCN Advance Wars game for cheap and it was pretty fun!
fe9 (gcn) is probably the best in the series, and fe10 isn't far behind. absolutely worth getting.

...it has guilty gear accent core plus, King of Fighters 94 (sucks) to 98 (slower than i'd like but still solid) and tatsunoko vs. capcom. yes, it's better there. the snes fighters really aren't good anymore. SF2 might've been nice back then but today? sorry, it sucks. turbo's barely playable and is vastly inferior to the 3 main fighters on the system that aren't Brawl, which i have nothing against either.
SF2 still sees more play than the rest of the games on your list because it's still better than all of them. It's certainly not "barely playable." And "vastly inferior" is just a ridiculous statement. ST still appears in tournaments all over the place, still has a solid playerbase on GGPO, and even regular Turbo has been at a high profile tournament within the last couple years.
Just by virtue of having SF2 and UMK3 the SNES is the best Nintendo console for fighting games. It'd be even more clear if it had ST.
I'd be curious about that. My perception is that Guilty Gear is still really big in Japan, but the scene in America is not in great shape. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
my point was that pretending that SF2 is some outdated unplayable game is just silly. that people are still playing it a bunch 20 years after release in a genre where overwhelmingly people move to new games and abandon old ones (the leftovers of the 3S/CvS2/MvC2 scenes are evidence of this) speaks to how good it is.
Well I'm pretty sure Guilty Gear still has exposure in all the major tournaments-- it's just not streamed often so you only know it if you're actually there or actively looking for it. It was at last year's Evo, at least.
But anyway, main point is that SSF2 still having tournaments is a byproduct of #1 being from an era where it was the only good fighter #2 being a capcom game and then a distant #3 its actual quality. Exposure trumps quality in any sort of tournament scene-- this is the main reason why Brawl and Melee are so popular as well. I mean, it's still a good game I'm not saying it's unplayable or anything but it's definitely outclassed by all of those games Wang mentioned aside from KoF 94.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
...man this is the first i've heard using 'the tournament scene' as the justification of a fighter being better than the other. O_o
nothing ridiculous about the fact that the fighting game genre has evolved immensely over the years. hell, look at KoF 97 or 98 and compare it to anything 3 years prior (just don't look 3 years ahead in the series or else you may injure yourself).
and mind you, the KoF 94-98 games? one of the very few Wii disc sets and, even rarer, it's actually done well. unlike Metal Slug's. >>;
