Dark Cloud 2 with a huge lead. Interesting that I didn't plan on playing that until Summer of 2014 or so.

XG has a very long disc 1. XSI is episode 1 of the Xenosaga story and has a lot of cut-scenes, after beating XSI, you would want to follow up with XSII and XSIII. They are both high quality games with fantastic music and epic well written storyline. I suggest that you play a bit of XG and a bit of XSI and see which one you like better and then continue to finish the one you like and then play the other one afterwards.

Suikoden V has good music, many characters, and an awesome political story. There are many twists and turns along the story but not as many as XG/XS. SV is far better than SIV but still not as good as SI and SII.

Tales of the Abyss is a very long RPG, has a good storyline but not comparable to XG/XS's.

Dark Cloud 2 differs from Dark Cloud 1 in graphic style, but is the same thing in gameplay. If you are going to play DC, play DC1 first, it has better music and town building gameplay.

Overall, all the ones you listed are good choices, but none of the above three offers the kind of deep storyline, music, nostalgia, sci-fi atmosphere, plot and epicness that the Xeno series offers. The Xeno series has a "it" factor that is more akin of an experience than just playing a RPG.

yeah, of those dark cloud 2 is the big standout with plenty to do.

and avoid dark cloud 1. there's no need to play it and it's generally a worse game.

I'd lean Dark Cloud 2.

Xenosaga is terrible, don't much care on Suikoden V, Xenogears is pretty good, and Tales of the Abyss is great on gameplay but I can't especially stomach the anime tropes too much.

My uncle says he spent an entire spring break playing through Dragon Warrior. Maybe it was 2, I don't know. He got through the entire game that week.

He says it was the best week of his life.

Anyways, uh... Xenosaga.

Interesting mix.

Suikoden V has brilliant political writing but the gameplay is a snooze-fest.

Xenogears... the gameplay is less of a snooze, but it's probably worse, with a few stupid mechanics. It also has outstanding storytelling, though it's a very different style than S5.

Xenosaga tries for the same style of storytelling as Gears but does a way less good job of it, it spans three games and ends up a mess. However, the first two games actually had pretty fun battle systems (albeit one could rag on the pacing of both games in different ways).

Tales of the Abyss has a pretty stupid, anime tropeish plot, but I do like the two main characters which is a plus. Its gameplay is... a simple action RPG. I don't like those, some people do, and those who do generally like Abyss.

I know almost nothing about Dark Cloud 2, haven't seen it talked about much in RPG communities I hang out in.

I'd honestly encourage you to read people's opinions about the games and decide which to play based on that, but if you're just counting votes I'll throw one for Xenogears... I like it and S5 about equally but S5 is quite a niche game and as such a bit of a lost cause here.
