Actually, if any of you have ever played Valkyria Chronicles 1/2, that's the point I'm trying to make. VC1 is DS1. VC2 is DS2.

How do you feel about the P3 vs P4 then? It's about the same situation as DS1 vs DS2.

Not the same to me. P3 had a better atmosphere and more tension than P4 but it's character writing was a lot worse. In P3 every high-schooler acts like they're 35 except for Junpei, and everyone is Batman with dead parents. They were still likable and the cast was pretty good but P4 did a much better job writing its characters and making them have personalities.

Do you at least think the DS2 protagonist gets better choice text? I like the stuff he gets to "say" a lot more than DS1's protagonist.

Oh yeah, definitely.

I also named my protagonist Jack Jones, so it's hard not to like him more than the DS1 guy. The DS1 guy does have an awesome ending option, though.

I found this game easier than DS1 even with all the boss shenanigans mentioned already. There's just too many skills available halfway through the game for them to threaten any of the playable characters, it's way easier to fuse passives on demons this time around since there's a compendium and the fusion enhancements you unlock later on are amazing. Plus some of the evolved racial skills for demons are ridiculous. I sometimes felt bad being able to attack twice from 6 spaces away. Sometimes.

The most challenging part about the boss fights is not their attack range but how long the battles drag on. They're more of an endurance test since the bosses shouldn't be able to do any serious damage but the fights last forever from them summoning an infinite amount of demons, transforming when they're about to die, etc. Also, I don't think DS1 had any bosses that could kill themselves from having their attacks reflected back at them.
