Instead of just making the enemies more difficult, it looks like they decided to go the route of adding way more respawning enemies and enemies with Evil Wave, in addition to jacking up the boss range. When my character can only move 4 spaces in one turn and the boss can attack me from 6 spaces away with no repercussions, there's a problem.

It's not even really hard, it's just annoying as hell and not fun at all.

Chaos Wave doesn't help. It takes away your extra turns, decreases your movement speed, and reduces your turn order ranking. That's because being able to attack for free from far away in a game like Devil Survivor is broken as hell and needs to be balanced somehow.

In the meantime, a boss just attacked my main character three times in a row from 4 spaces away before he could move once. FUN GAMEPLAY

Because when it's not turning on Fake Difficulty, it's pretty fun.

This particular boss fight has just been completely terrible though (Mizar). It's not broken but it's the antithesis of fun.

A couple of Devil Survivor 1 bosses were broken as f***, too. I'm still only on day 3 of DS2, so I have yet to see the real BS fights.

That said, I recall reaching a breaking point in DS where the bosses became so ridiculously overpowered that the only way to continue was to become overpowered myself. The last day was first spent struggling through fight after fight, only for the final few bosses to be total pushovers.

DS1 bosses were broken, but in way more fun ways. They were just tough. DS2 bosses are "I'm a boss with a beefed up Chaos Wave with no penalties, whenever you damage me I spawn more parts of me with more Chaos Waves that will continue to attack your characters repeatedly while you sit around and do nothing"

Reasons to get DS1 over DS2:
-Better story
-Better characters
-Better sense of tension
-Better designed levels and enemies
-Better art

Reasons to get DS2 over DS1:
-Demon Compendium
-Midori

And then Overclocked went and included the Demon Compendium. And voice acting.

It's not long for a SMT game. There's no filler.

Two more things I forgot:

There's a difference between difficulty and fake difficulty - a very important one. DS2 is either 'not hard' or 'fake difficulty'.

Aside from that, I enjoyed basically everything in DS1 more anyway!

SMT games tend to do that. DS1 has a big difficulty spike near the end but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle without a little preparation. Different people have different standards for difficulty so I'm not sure what it would be like for you.

To complete it? Took me 107 hours on my save file to finish, though my 3DS says 125 hours.

Devil Survivor 2 was ridiculously easy compared to the first game. Most of the Septentriones go down pretty quick compared to the Bels, and six range is simple to deal with; giving one of them a free shot isn't the end of the world. There's no fight in DS2 that's nearly as full of bulls*** as the fight with Jezebel, for instance.

Also, the characters in DS2 are pretty much superior. There's a couple of lame characters like Keita and Ronaldo, sure, but then you have winners like Jungo and Joe that completely blow the first game's cast out of the water, especially since the Fate system lets you get to know them better.

The only thing I'd agree that the first game did better was the atmosphere; even though the world was in less danger in the first game, it felt more dangerous thanks to actually having to focus on survival rather than joining a super demon-fighting organization.

Agreed. Pretty much all of the difficulty in the game comes from the fact that all the bosses after day 3 have HUGE range. Getting nuked without even being able to cast a Shield All spell sucks. I know I was pissed as hell when, even a bit overleveled based on the limit more or less placed on your ability to level with the final free battle demons levels, I got to the 3rd phase of the final boss and one of the enemies nukes me with Multi-strike and 1 shots each of my parties. Had to fuse reflect/null/drain phys onto a bunch of demons and match them with leaders with phys null/drain/reflect to avoid just getting insta-nuked.

I never had any real trouble with the Septentriones (or whatever). With the boss battles in this game, it kind of falls down to what resistances and skills your teams have. Of course, you can't exactly know what attacks the bosses will use before you fight them, but so long as you have well rounded offenses/defenses, you shouldn't have too much trouble surviving a few hits.

And don't be shy about upgrading your demons whenever possible.

DS1's cast is way better than DS2's cast. DS2's cast is so anime-cliche that it's insane. They basically assigned a stereotype to almost everyone and called it a day. DS1's cast felt way more like actual people.

I feel it's worth noting that DS2 doesn't have all those annoying rescue/escort missions like DS1 had. And the times you do need to keep AI characters alive, they're generally more competent and sturdy, with more healing spells.

I feel they both have around the same amount of "anime cliche", but it sticks out less in DS1 due to the more tense/serious tone everybody has most of the game. That kind of thing doesn't bother me in general though. I'm not sure what it is about DS2's cast, but I like them more overall. Both still have a few characters I don't care about at all though. Man I really wish Haru was playable in DS1. Izuna too, but she might have been or been an assist on a map. I can't remember.

Well let me rephrase what I said then; DS1 did its cliches a lot better. The characters felt like people. They were archetypes of characters, not stereotypes. DS2 is basically nothing but stereotypes. Off the top of my head, the only well-written characters with any sort of development or depth to them are Makoto and maybe Yamato. I'm not interested in what ends up happening to any of them, honestly.
