Apparently, the gaming club at my university only wants to play Melee, Halo games, and random fighting games. I don't think I've ever seen Brawl being advertised for any gaming event, with this club or anywhere else except for Brawl's midnight launch.
I've always preferred Brawl to Melee, personally!

Physics engine is campy, overly defensive, and random. "Bad" is obviously subjective, but most people would take a technically proficient and fast fighter over a turtle-fest.

it plays very slow, defensive options are overpowered, ledge invincibility is too abuseable, sakurai has a hard on for his own characters while actual nintendo icons like link and mario are terrible, the biggest issue is just that it is an extremely slow game that mostly rewards those who take patience to an inhuman extreme
Sometimes my friends and I get the urge to play some smash. We try brawl and just find after a few matches that its slow and boring. We then switch to Melee and lay for hours without getting bored.
We try Original too ftr, but it takes like 4 matches before we feel like we've tried everything in the game (until we start trying for hours to beat our Board the Platform records)

Tripping, too floaty, items seem less fun for some reason.
Also, for some reason, it feels like the stages are generally more cramped and/or more hazardous, which is a pain when some of the people playing are new to the game.
While Brawl has its fair share of problems, I still vastly prefer playing it to Melee. In Melee, I can use only Jigglypuff and Falcon effectively, while in Brawl I'm comfortable playing as half the cast.
^Sure it is. Being much better at one particular game could make a person prefer it, even if there are (more) objective arguments in favor of the alternative.
I mean, I'd take Melee over Brawl in a heartbeat, but there's nothing intrinsically wrong with a defensive, random engine. Maybe he's just into that sort of thing.
