And people who understand statistics everywhere laughed.

You shouldn't play numbers that have come up before? As if there's not essentially an equally likely chance of them coming up again as any other combination? I'm willing to understand that MAYBE, just MAYBE, the numbers in the machine aren't purely perfectly random, and thus because of the weight of the ball or the way they're released into the machine or some other fluke of ridiculously higher-order physics, the number 17 comes up more than 16 by a half a percentage point. So if i argue that, the points of picking your own numbers and sticking to them make at least a TINY bit of sense. But the rest? Just...no.

If you flip a coin heads 5 times in a row, the next coin isn't more likely to be heads because it's on a hot streak, and it isn't less likely because "tails is due to come up." It's still 50/50.

This guy has (supposedly) won 7 times. Lucky him. But how often has he played it? My friend likes to call the lottery a "tax for the stupid" because of how poor your odds are, and that the returns aren't commensurate to that risk. I can't blame him. I also can't blame anyone for thinking there *might* be some kind of patterns that would help someone win, but I can't imagine they're all that likely to turn the tide if they're even right in the first place. Finding a combination that's never hit before, though? That's pure stupidity at work.

Oh, Richard Lustig. Figured it would be about him and his stupid book.

Yes, anyone with a brain knows that it's 100% luck. He's won the lottery a ton of times because he spends thousands and thousands of dollars on lottery tickets so he can win and then make books making up nonsense about tips on how to win.

It's actually quite disgusting.

The best thing you can do is pick a number that you are sure will be less popular. Although it doesn't increase your chances of winning, it does increase your chances of getting a bigger payout if you do win (less people to share the prize with).

However, I don't play the lottery, because there is a negative expected value.

errrrrr

I guess this makes sense in theory, but like you said, it doesn't increase your chance of winning, and you need to win first =/

Yeah, when the jackpot is like 150 million or more, it's fun to put a dollar down, but playing it every week, or playing many tickets is crazy.

I always do the quick pick, since it's... quick, and I don't want to bother picking numbers manually.

I already said it doesn't increase your chances of winning.

But I mean, if you pick like 10 11 12 13 14 15 or something like that you will seriously be sharing your prize with hundreds or thousands of people. Better to choose something less ordinary.

I mean, there is no way to increase your chances of winning except buying more numbers.
