Okay, lets all make a big collective WHOOSH sound of this flying over all your heads.

It means a drop in innovation, and a spike in franchise/wallet milking.

Most of the sequals you all mentioned had legitimate innovations, and very little if not NO wallet gouging.

Sequels are nothing new, but modern gaming almost exclusively focuses on them. It's so hard for a new series to break through.

I am literally typing this as I watch a commercial for Call of Duty DLC, too. This is what gaming has come to?

Yeah, I saw that commercial yesterday and was cringing pretty hard.

I'd have to disagree. New IPs this generation include Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Portal, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Gears of War, Rock Band, and Saints Row just to name a few. Even Call of Duty, while it did exist prior to this generation, didn't become the juggernaut that it is until Modern Warfare (sort of like how GTA existed prior to the PS2 era but was a much different entity prior to GTA3).

They may be new IPs, but they have already been sequel'd to death. And so the cycle continues.

It's pretty simple though.

Every generation creates more new series while eliminating less old ones.
Not only do all successful IPs this generation have their sequels, but we have sequels and installments from all the series from the past.

The alarming trend would be the reliance on established series because of all the risk going into super high budget games and stuff.

besides Assassin's Creed, and ignoring portable titles, none of those have more than 3 entries. As has already been demonstrated, it was frequent for games to get 3 or more entries on just the NES as well. Yeah, the cycle continues, because it has existed for over 20 years and has not had as detrimental an effect as is being claimed

Yeah and next generation will no doubt have new IPs that will dominate with their own series of sequels. To suggest that this is anything new or problematic is pretty ignorant.

Older series stick around, but tend to get fewer games. Like all those series that got 3+ games on NES got 1, maybe 2 on SNES and sometimes skipped generations entirely.

I didn't say it was a problem. I'm just pointing out their newness has worn off quickly.

If it's not a problem, why complain?

Everyone clambors for "NEW IPs!!!" which the developers make. But successful new IPs get sequels because, surprise, people who enjoy a game generally would like to play more of it. It doesn't even hurt the industry at all, because games are generally improved with sequels! Or would you rather Uncharted, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed have stopped before the second game in each series? <_<

A game having or being a sequel doesn't make it a bad game. And there have been PLENTY of new IPs this gen. If you're counting downloadable titles, there's been a crazy amount. People would just rather complain about Call of Duty.
