Oh dear, folk metal that isn't Primordial (or two other bands I won't mention because I want to see if anyone will ever mention them)

Skyclad?

I don't get the appeal of this kind of thing, it's just taking non-traditional (for metal) instruments and playing something fast and assuming that it just must be awesome when you put it over electric guitars and harsh vocals

It must be awesome, it's like peanut butter and chocolate its like whoa you got folk in my metal ohmy.

As a massive fan of both peanut butter and chocolate, I can safely say that the combination of the two is not that good and that I am for unrelated reasons going to go get some of both right this minute.

Slayer - Captor of Sin

Hey, early Slayer. Another of those "wonder when they'll show up" bands.

I've never really been a big Slayer fan, I feel like they're at their best when going for a relentless, straight forward thrash assault (like this) but they just tend to be...not that stellar at it. They're alright, but I feel like they rarely capture the energy of bands found on an album like Darkness Descends or None Shall Defy. So...it's decent.

Anthrax - A.I.R.

Hmm, been a while since I listened to any Anthrax. And by a while I mean...a year or so maybe? I like this song, probably my second favourites of theirs (behind Medusa...oh hey, wonder if Spreading the Disease is my favourite of their albums?). As we all know though "straightforward thrash I like" is pretty much the bane of my existence when it comes to making interesting write ups. I could rant about airplanes or something I guess, but that would be kind of dumb. Plus you'd get in serious legal trouble for taking Anthrax on an airplane. Or into a school. Or government building. Yeah...that joke was a stretch.

You can't play rock or metal if your name has the word "quiet" in it, NEXT!

I kid. I know that some metal fans tend to hate the more "stadium rock" style songs (like how a lot of folks don't like Judas Priests You've Got Another Thing Comin') but I'm not one of those. This is pretty entertaining and got to headbang along to a little. Don't care for the guitar solo much but it's far from the worst thing that could happen. All in all, it's fun.

Well so much for the idea of people posting stuff by Skyclad and Moonsorrow and being surprised when I didn't hate them <_< Yeah. I thought they were just tolerable until Paganfest 2008, AKA the five or six hours I bought a ticket to solely to get forty minutes of Primordial. Moonsorrow put on a pretty damn awesome show and it's made me like them a lot more, although they're not a favourite or anything (definitely the weakest of the Skyclad/Moonsorrow/Primordial group). The only reason they weren't the best part of the night by a mile was Primordial being even more awesome.

Hibria - Defying the Rules

Doing this **** to me should be against the Geneva Convention.

So this actually escapes...some...of my power metal hate because the riffs are solid enough and the guitar tone is pretty sweet, which makes the aforementioned riffs better. And I actually kind of like the singer, at least when he's not veering a bit into "soaring and obnoxious" territory (although even then, he's not so much bad as he is just not good, pretty average). So I don't care for the chorus much. Second half of the song is kind of bad, mediocre solo into a kind of shaky breakdown-ish section, although it picks back up a bit after that nonsense is over. Kind of shocked that this didn't end up being complete crap.

Running Wild - Diamonds of the Black Chest

You know, it always felt a bit odd that a lot of people called Alestorm a Running Wild clone. Admittedly it's been a long time since I listened to Alestorm at all but I don't remember them playing a style overly similar to these guys. Being pirate themed doesn't mean you're alike in anything other than gimmick. So, the song itself. I have a soft spot for Running Wild, and Gates of Purgatory is one of those albums I listen to quite frequently. The whole pirate thing is associated with a stretch where their music was kind of hit and miss to me and started to get away from the straight forward trad/speed metal stuff they did so well early on, but this is still early enough that the decay hasn't set in much and as a result, I like it.

Judas Priest - One Shot At Glory

In the grand scheme of Judas Priest songs, Dreamer Deceiver, Dissident Aggressor and One Shot at Glory are probably the top contenders for the throne of their best song. Song kicks ass from start to finish and has one of my favourite choruses in heavy metal. I'm about to hit the character limit for this post and don't want to, so I'll leave it off by saying One Shot at Glory kicks ****ing ass.

Eh. Hammers of Misfortune are a band that seems like I should really like them, but it just never really clicks for me. As far as bands with Mike Scalzi in them go (and yeah I know he's not in Hammers anymore), I much prefer Slough Feg, who are a favourite of mine.

Also, random note. According to metal-archives, there once existed a band called Satanic Butt Slayer. That's almost as "interesting" a band name as Doing Nuns In The Butt For Satan.

Apologies for the length.

Oh god damn it twenty ****ing minutes of Dream Theater is so not what I needed tonight. Alright. So this is really quite alright to start, but really the more it progresses through the intro the less appealing it gets. Once we hit the heavy part ("aw yeah here comes the heavy part bro" I wonder if that meme makes sense to anyone likely to be reading this) the downhill slope goes from gradual to fun-to-go-down-on-a-bike. That's a scientific measurement. It's basically typical Dream Theater syndrome, they can do something decently interesting briefly, but eventually they have to tone up either the wank or the melodrama, sometimes both, plus their obsession in later years with trying to be heavy is pretty bad.

Four minutes in. 20% of the way through. And I already feel like this has been going on for a long time. Man this topic must give the impression I dislike long songs, even though I really don't. Oh, it's James LaBrie...not trying to sing any high notes yet so that's a good sign but I'm sure it will change some day (seriously he sounds so bloody awful whenever he sings high pitch). The backing vocals that are popping up here feel like something I'd expect from a bad nu-metal band. Come to think of it some of this chugging guitar is feeling very nu-metal/bad metalcore in general. Nine minutes in and some awful instrumental section is going on (why are the vocal parts in a Dream Theater song the highlight what in the name of fried rice is happening here) and the idea that I'm only halfway through is just too much for me. The end.

Youtube comments are a gold mine of unintentional comedy, plus they're great for reminding you you're not the dumbest person on the planet after all. Same reason people read the comments on porn videos.

Yay comedy! I like this song, the chorus is a tad on the silly side but it's a small problem, and I like the verses a lot. It's not a top tier Maiden song by any means (those would be...well I'm not going to say just in case they get posted), but still good. What an utterly useless parenthetical statement that was. And I've been doing the "not the best but still good" routine a lot. I'm going to stop this write up before it gets even more self-referential than I already have been getting (damn it!)

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark

So yeah the whole "in case a top tier Maiden song gets posted" thing sure lasted a long time. Four songs that I'd say fit that tier, and this is one of them. Intro is nice and eerie (and god damn amazing to be part of live), love the return to it for the very end. Middle of the song is just a great, energetic build up towards the finale, and this is one of my favourite Bruce Dickinson performances, he nailed the proper feel for every part of this song. It's a shame that most of the Fear of the Dark album was rather lacking, because this song is great.

The softer parts of this are pretty spiffy, the harder parts are pretty sketchy. The mixture of the two is...hit and miss. Fortunately the spiffy parts seem to outnumber the sketchy bits, and the end result is a fairly good bit of music. Also in violation of the topic title specifying "song" (instrumentals technically aren't) but no one on earth cares about that distinction. Why'd I bring it up? Who knows?

Testament - Riding the Snake

Oh Testament. I remember seeing these guys live some years ago. Unfortunately I don't remember how they were. Not much point in mentioning it, but hey, not like I'm being paid for this! Okay okay, Testament is alright. There's something about the guitar tone here that bugs me, not too severely though, and I never realized how much Chuck Billy sounds like a gruffer James Hetfield before. Maybe it's the whole "never been huge on the band and when I do listen to them, it's an album from over a decade before this one" thing. There was a point in there somewhere. I think it's that this song is pretty average.

Moonsorrow - Pimeä

Wasn't an invitation to throw 14 minute songs at me!

<_<

So Verisakeet is the album I've listened to most by these guys, although still not recently enough to be hugely familiar with any song other than Jotunheim. I recognize this song, but I don't know it, if that makes sense. With that traditional little entry blurb taken care of, the song itself. I really like the production here, it really lends a distinctive atmosphere that the music capitalizes on. Guitar work is mostly pretty traditional black metal fare, with the folk elements being kept in a supporting role where they work best. This is why I like this band, they're good at blending together their different styles in a way that complement each other. I've always been a bit lukewarm on the vocals here though, the higher pitched ones really, they're a little awkward. The whole thing also does drag a tad, mainly because it feels like it's starting to build up to a climax when it's really not near the end yet, and then repeats that same feeling. The actual climax itself is also a bit of an underwhelming fade out. Still, it's a good song.

This is among the more obnoxious intros in the history of everything, for the record. And it's entirely unneeded to boot. God awful song writing decision there. Once we get onto the rest of the song, it's not bad at all, but that intro drags the whole thing down quite a ways.

This was going well until the vocals kicked in. Not fond of this singer at all, and the riffs he's singing over aren't nearly strong enough to make me ignore him. Song isn't shabby when he's not being annoying though.

I wonder if you picked a long song because you liked it or because you hoped I'd hate it and have to suffer through it.

The latter won't happen though! I like some Neurosis, and I really enjoy Through Silver in Blood. Whole album is full of good use of build up and atmosphere, proper climaxes and softer sections that lead into the next part. And when it decides to go all out, it kicks your ass. The lengthy intro here would put some people off but it gradually adds new stuff to the mix as it progresses, which is something I tend to really like, so it never gets dull and you can feel from the beginning that it's all leading up to something good. And it does, although the funny part here is that there's never a particularly explosive climax anywhere in this song. The section from 6 to 7 minutes is probably the closest. Which makes judging this song rather tough; it's a bit lacking in oomph on its own, but I'm so used to it in context of an album where everything flows together that I can't not associate it with the songs that follow. Bleh.

Elvenking - Another Awful Hobs Tales

A song by Elvenking, with the word "awful" in the title. They're doing my work for me here! This is pretty bad, the singer has no power or emotion or anything, the music is bland (although not THAT awful really), there's not much to appeal here. This interlude at 2:00 sounds like I've heard it before in something else, though I can't place where or why. What's with the silence at the end of the video? Shouldn't complain I guess, it's the highlight of the song!

Eh, I really don't know how to handle things like this. It's especially hard to try to write a comedic write up of a song that's already totally goofy. I guess I'll say that this gimmick doesn't really work for me here - Mario is *not* one of those video game franchises whose music sounds particularly great on electric guitar. Also, what's with the random addition of something else at the end? Why do all these videos end so weird?!

Cormorant - Unearthly Dreamings

>.>

:)

Yeah Cormorant is great, Dwellings was probably my favourite 2011 album. Unearthly Dreamings is not my favourite on the album (10 imaginary points to whoever can guess what is!) but it's still very good. After a solid beginning that sets the tone for what's to come, the section beginning at 2:30 is killer and is the moment where you realize this song kicks ass, because it's pretty much all good from there on. Okay the clean vocal section before the five minute mark isn't that special, but it serves a great lead in to the next part ("burn, burn the ties that bind") which is great as a sort of fake climax, since the song is by no means over yet. I'm kind of in "this part is great" mode for everything that remains now; in fact, paying close enough attention to this song to write about it is actually making me realize it's even better than I gave it credit for. It may have just jumped up to 2nd place on the album. This is getting long so I'll sum it all up by saying this song is great, a strong example of how to do long "epic" metal songs the right way, and anyone who hasn't should be checking out Dwellings right now, very good album by a band that deserves support.

Dio - Stand Up and Shout

I'm running out of space in this post so I'm going to be brief and say that if you haven't figured out that Dio is god and Holy Diver is a great album yet, you haven't been into metal very long or your brain may be seriously flawed.

Slice the Cake - Of Gallows

worst band name ever
best deathcore ever (maybe)

Slice the Cake. I like that name. This intro actually starts off pretty good, although it gets worse as it goes and...dear god this is torturous. Whose bright idea was leaving that keyboard in the background anyway, without it this would merely be mediocre...oh, there's the more standard deathcore elements. Painful clean vocals are when I tune out.

You know I've seen a lot of hype for Burst from people who usually like stuff I do, but I've always remembered not caring for them. Let's see if this changes my mind. Okay so...the harsh vocals are not doing it for me, they stand out way too much against the softer music, and not in the good way, more the "seriously bro?" way. The more energetic sections make it work a bit more though. I don't know, I guess I can see why people would like it but it's not my cup of tea.

E: Okay I really only posted that because of the track title it's not really all that metal

Man for some reason the sounds of the drums here is really standing out to me. I do not know at all why. Anyway, not really all that metal indeed but it's kind of amusing, albeit very...unfocused.

Iron Maiden - Running Free

Figures that when I get some Di'Anno Maiden posted, it would be a song that doesn't stand out much. I think the main problem is...kind of ironic given how much I've chewed songs out for trying to do too much...it's just way too basic. Pretty much just a very simple riff and drum pattern with a chorus that takes up a large portion of the overall play time and isn't even all that different or varied. It's fun stuff, but it feels like someone took the first verse of a song and decided to make it the entire song.

Megadeth - Washington is Next!

This intro, man. Remember when Megadeth played aggressive, energetic thrash? Yeah I'm definitely in the "Megadeth ceased to exist somewhere after 1990" camp, although they did not decay NEARLY as bad as Metallica and compared to how some other legendary bands like Queensryche and Morbid Angel have utterly disgraced themselves in recent years, it's hard to get too angry at Mustaine for simply being duller than he used to be (could get angry at him for his political views perhaps, but that's a little outside the realm of this topic). I could start talking about the song but I've come this far without it, so why change when I've got a good thing going? In all seriousness, you can piece together what I think already - it's a bit dull but not unpleasant, and does occasionally show some signs that the guy who gave us Rust in Peace and Peace Sells is still in there somewhere.

Sister - Werewolves on Blackstreet

Is the idea of this video to try to show the dumbest looking musicians in metal history? That's a very, very tall order, so kudos to shooting for the skies! Maybe it changes at some point, I stopped looking so I could type stuff. As far the music goes, it's kind of catchy, although I don't like the chorus a lot and...hey, a guitar solo that started bad but ended up kind of fitting? I'm impressed. Overall this has catchiness going for it and basically nothing else, which isn't enough to earn a high score, but it does spare it from earning my undying hate.

VeryInsane's goal is to find that 10/10 song.

Let's start by finding some mainstream metal songs... Granted, I don't think you are going to give any of them 10/10, but they are all close to (or in case, really is) my favorite song by each band.
