I was going to be upset about this always online thing but then I remembered that I'm always online with both systems right now as is.

Maybe I'll try and get a better connection before I next-gen (if I do at all) but this certainly isn't something people should freak out over in 2012. I feel like if you don't have a decent high speed connection at this point you're too many years in the past to be worrying about the next gen in consoles.

That is a fair point I suppose, but they could potentially make it a lot easier to configure your connections. Maybe you can save connection settings so you only have to like, switch to a different tab when you take a console somewhere?

I don't know, I don't like moving my consoles at all. I don't think my PS3 or 360 have moved since I first set them up. >.>

the thing about always online isn't "well we should all have high speed internet by now anyway" it's that inconvenient DRM is being added that has no benefit and sometimes has negatives. compare Starcraft 1 and Warcraft 3 to Starcraft 2 for instance. it takes a lot longer just to start playing the game. there's no upside to that.

It's just a rumor, not confirmed.

That said, an always online measure isn't as bad as we're making it out to be, theoretically - it just depends how they do it. Still bad for those times where we lose internet, but not game-breaking.

If you have to be actively online and playing games on online servers? Yeah, it's crap.

But if you have to simply be connected to the server, that's not bad - it takes very little bandwidth to do, and pretty much anyone could do it.

Having slow internet, even excessively so, won't effect this too much. Unless Microsoft is incredibly stupid, this will likely take even less bandwidth than it takes to connect to Steam(which is next to nothing).

Another awful thing >.<

Hopefully they take a page from Steam in this regard and either only require the internet to start the game, or just do something like pause the game or remember your progress.

(although to be fair if you lose 5 hours of progress from that I"m gonna go out on a limb and call it your fault for not saving :P)

Ubisoft has already proved that even if it's a single-player game and you only need to be online as a DRM check, it can and will fail miserably.

The point is that you can't have the pirated/cracked version of a game be superior to the legit version, because that directly produces piracy. And I can guarantee that if the rumors really are true, then the consoles will be hacked VERY quickly.

If they have lots of benefits for being online, but still allow you to play offline without those features, then that would be the best option. That's what Steam does,

No to mention how much faster it is than starting a console game.

Biggest thing I hate about current gen is how you can't just turn on the machine and have it autoplay the game. You need some sort of input from the player. Though I think PS3 does this if you have autologin on, so that's cool.

yeah that

DRM that gets in the way of you just playing the game (whether it prevents you from doing it or slows it down) is only going to encourage piracy. it's a non-issue for games where the core content is online play, but for single player games people are going to be like "why am I paying for a gimped version of this game."

I'm no game designer, but I'm fairly confident that it someone was developing a game for a system that needed to be online all the time, they might not design it so that a drop in connection instantly erases several hours worth of work.

Got these things called checkpoints and autosaves now. They're pretty handy.

And this is all rumour anyhow. I'm gonna wait and see which console looks objectively better based on price, games and the system itself then buy that. I'm hoping it's the next Xbox, but if turns out to be the PS4, then I'll get that.

That said, if both consoles keep their pads then it's Xbox all the way. Can't stand those flimsy PS3 controllers.

Yeah, I agree pretty much 100% with this. I can't remember which developer I read about recently saying this, but they were talking about how developers are going against anti-piracy all wrong. They're not supposed to be trying to "kill" free, they need to COMPETE with free, and so far they aren't doing it.

oh god consoles

if someone else in my apartment is using the internet, who knows how long it's going to take to make the 360 start working. that it waits until you sign in before it displays menus and lets you play your offline games is probably not a big deal for the vast majority of people but it affects me daily. damn you slow internet.
