I know Australia did it a long time ago (smallest denomination was 5 cents when I went in 2006), and the United States has been considering it for years as well. Apparently, the metals in US pennies are more valuable melted than they are in penny form.

US has just kinda gone backwards is all. Used to be, way back when, we'd do things and the rest of the world, having twiddled their thumbs or suffered from economic crises for too long to lead, would follow.

Now...!

Americans don't really have $1 coins, either, because nobody wants to use coins. As neat as the $1 coins are, ultimately, nobody ever wants them. So why would we want a $2 coin, a denomination that doesn't even (really) exist in the first place?

Like 10-15 years ago, America had tons of $1 and 50 cent coins. Now the most you see is quarters.

Anyways, I would laugh if America did this as well. $11 million is nice, but we have over ONE MILLION times that much debt.

Great move.

I gave a speech on why the US should do it. It costs us like 2.7 cents just to make a penny. But of course, people in Illinois are the strongest backers of keeping it because it shows Abe Lincoln.

Holy s***, nice work Canada. You looking at this, U.S.? Your lack of progressivism is why the Canadian dollar is stronger these days. Get rid of the penny, and while you're at it take a serious look at the nickel. These coins are so out of date it's ridiculous. We should just start rounding to the first decimal place instead of the second from now on.

And let's also take a look at the dollar bill. Paper money has an extremely short lifespan compared to coins. 5 dollar bills and up are fine, but there's a reason Canada uses 1 and 2 dollar coins. I'd like it if we had 2 dollar coins. I really like the toonie. The only major downside of having a lot of coins is that they weigh more than bills, but this isn't a huge deal since I don't carry a lot of cash these days anyway.

Is it blasphemy to get rid of the iconic 1 dollar bill with Washington's face on it? Holy crap I don't care, there's more important things to be worrying about. Put his face on the 50, who gives a s*** about Grant anyway?

In the USA, 70 MILLION DOLLARS are spent EVERY YEAR to make up for the difference between the value of the copper and the value of the penny.
This is enough money to vaccine 4,117,647 children against the 6 major childhood diseases
But yeah, pennies are totally worth that.

Imagine if you put that money into energy research! Or a school system! Imagine how much that could do in the average charity! But no, we're too busy making pennies so people can lose productivity.

We have $1 coins, but they are difficult to find. When the US Mint makes up stupid gimmicks like $1 coins for every US President, they will be difficult to find as collectors will horde all of the coins for themselves and not spend them.
